We will be delving into the boy's past which I have made very complicated indeed for no reason. Harry has (two) seats at Wizengamot. He just barely attends except when he feels like it / he hears enough about an issue to care about it.
School mascot is definitely an owl haha. A snowy white owl in fact.
Harry's converted all the useable rooms into classrooms. The school is unfortunately not an orphanage at the same time. This takes place in slightly more modern Britain, so orphanages are no longer in use. Foster families are more in line of what the school does with students from bad living situations. There is also an elaborate set of secrecy wards used to bind Muggle families so they cannot harm their child or tell other people about the magical world. That part was Tom's idea (he helped Hermione with the legislation of the school - it was a bipartisan initiative; also why Harry was chosen, Muggle raised but from a traditional name so he appealed to both sides). We will learn more about the school next chapter! You are very right about it being underfunded.
