Comment on mon bateau s'en va vers vous

  1. thank you!! the seed for this fic was mostly "what if we could get lestat to the point of the conversation about magnus in 1x06 without involving either domestic violence or the threat of louis refusing to ever see or talk to him again", because like you said a lot of the problem in s1 between louis and lestat is the refusal (on both sides!) or inability to say the important things out loud, or even some of the important things, which leads directly to the 1x05 fight, which is definitely a shatter point in the relationship. i think at the end of this fic there's still a lot of misunderstandings between them, but there might just be enough affection and belief that the other's affection is genuine to lead them through it - that was my goal, anyway!

    > Especially with Louis meeting with Claudia outside the house, actually, though I'll be curious to see what happens when all three of them are together again too.

funnily enough the now-deleted very first scene i wrote for this was claudia coming home and asking louis to leave with her for europe as she does in canon and louis, if not outright saying no, being much more reluctant to say yes, because in this au he knows EXACTLY what lestat means when lestat says the vampires in europe are vicious. and then when i had like 5k of the opening i sat down and looked at that scene again and had a definite moment of Oh. actually i don't want that to happen at all. i don't want the change to be louis saying no (because that's not really any more functional as a relationship, shoves the same conflict off for later, and is also awful for claudia actually) i want the change being lestat being able to let louis say yes!! Also if louis and claudia didn't get to have a relationship-changing roadtrip i'd be sad 3

    > It hurts in the best way that Lestat is so horrified to show this more vulnerable side, when really, keeping everything locked up was one of the things that led to so much misunderstanding. (Though I also would not want it coming out inebriated out of my mind, can't blame him there.)

lestat's attitude towards talking about his past fascinates me because like. It is a book-canonical fact about him that he wrote a book and published it about it like that's pretty much unavoidable. and in show-canon he's gonna say all that to a camera with daniel molloy behind it and also he blurted some of it out at the du lac dinner table. i tend to think that he's okay with talking about it if he can use it as a weapon and he's okay talking about it to people he doesn't really care about one way or the other but talking about it to Louis Specifically in a serious way? man that's HARD. easier to just not think about it ever. if he tells anyone else he can just eat them but if he tells louis then that's just the way the world is afterwards. like what if louis is appalled by him. worse what if louis Laughs. (and then there's the distant spectre of marius which is definitely also a significant factor)

anyway thank you for your lovely comment!!
