thank you so so so much! I've had a lot of experience with complex relationships, internal experiences, and familial dynamics, so I'm able to recognise that in media and bring to life what the canon writers wouldn't.
mikey and leos relationship as the eldest and youngest is very important to me, as i myself am the eldest child. i love writing them interacting, so you can definetly expect more of it in all previous and upcoming works!
mikey, as he was always dismissed by splinter because of his personality, has always clung to leo as a parental figure - which was only amplified as they grew older and both raph and donnie began to adopt similar traits from the behaviour they had seen. and of course leo was the closest to splinter, but above all his sole mission in life is to look after his brothers, therefore he has made any attempt to never let splinters influence cloud how he treats his brothers, especially the youngest. and of course as you see in this work, donnie and raph became dismissive of leo as a result of splinter consistently micromanaging the eldests every move - almost like a defence mechanism so they never had to acknowledge their fathers neglect to all of them. so in that, we're left with a lot of miscommunication, and a youngest brother who clings to his eldest brother like a lifeline.
i hope that explains until there's more content for you to go off, sorry if it was a lot :) you have no idea how much i appreciate comments such as yours, so again, thank you
You’re very very welcome! And don’t apologize for the long reply. I like having in-depth conversations! :D
Your analysis of the brothers is SO good. They all care for each other. But there’s just so much miscommunication due to how Splinter raises them. He’s a real piece of work, that’s for sure.
I feel like in the canon show, how Splinter was written as a parent was very mixed. I had conflicting feelings, sometimes he’d actually be sweet and caring, and then other times I’m like “that is your son, why would you say that to his face??”. I’m not sure if that was the intended purpose, or not. Idk. The writers didn’t seem very consistent.
Your interpretation of the relationships between the turtles and Splinter is still very complicated but yours is a little more consistent if that makes sense.
I want to explore this type of dynamic in my own TMNT iteration.
Also yes yes yes!!! Mikey and Leo have my favorite dynamic ever!! I love Leo & Raph’s relationship too, but Mikey & Leo have me in a constant chokehold. The Younger Brother-Older Brother dynamic spurred on by parental neglect. Ugh it’s just SO good.
While Mikey and Leo had a ton of scenes together in the canon show, I kinda wish…..they did more stuff together. I’m sorry for being so greedy but I love them so much!!
i personally wish the brothers had more times together overall, just bonding because so much of the canon show was creating plot, or building side characters/stories around the turtles but rarely ever expanding their dynamics and personalities. gotta rewrite this shoe myself istg these writers are so inconsistent.
i strongly dislike the rat😔👎 sure he did have some good moments, but he was portrayed as a sensei who favourited one student and not what he was really supposed to be - a father. i explain this more in another oneshot set at the farmhouse after splinters death, but his views of his past clouded his views on his sons and ultimately affected them for the worse. leo is an extension of teng shen and splinter himself. raph is, in splinters eyes, a reflection of young saki, and mikey/donnie didnt fit into his past so he didnt put the effort in to make them apart of his present/future. it definetly WASNT meant to be that deep in canon, but it is lol.
You know what? I completely agree with you 100%. While I liked the progression of the plot, I feel like it definitely lacked in expanding their dynamics at the same time. Which is a damn shame; there are SO many different dynamics I wanted to see but never came to fruition.
Also I can completely understand your dislike of the rat bastard. His parenting skills are……much to be desired. But you add such an interesting analysis to the parent-child dynamics. Because you’re right!
Despite seeming like a changed man, Splinter’s past as Yoshi still clings to him and is warping his perception of his own children. Seeing himself and Tang Shen in Leo, Saki in Raph and completing neglecting Mikey & Donnie. What a fascinating aspect to the relationship. But also…that is a big yikes from me LMAO
