Comment on Homegrown: Origins

  1. I'm going to need to see Steve attend a long and comprehensive lecture on human rights, children's rights and the very strict guidelines and safeguards one must follow when interrogating minors. If one has the right to interrogate children in the first place.
Then, I am going to need to hear Steve repeat all that he has learned. After which, I expect to see him turn away from any and all children that he might happen across. And move far, far away from them. Quickly.
Hopefully, the illegal and hypocritical behaviour will be acknowledged and dealt with, not just swept under the carpet. I know it's a story, but the issue is something I care about.
Tony having doubts AND being the 21st century voice of reason is very realistic and human. I would have expected more from Clint, but I guess he and Natasha are covert agents who don't have as much problem with violating human rights...?
Poor M, though, the first things those "responsible adults/heroes" should have done is provide her with medical attention and food. That child needs trauma counselling, not being treated like a criminal whose rights are being conveniently ignored. She doesn't even seem aware that how she is being treated is wrong, probably due to her previous living arrangements. I need her to have people advocating for her rights. Which only reminds me how kids are being treated in superhero movies. Eh.
It seems, though, that M has been trained well cause she is able to point the Avengers to a location. What will they find there? A trap? An empty building abandoned in a rush? More kids for Steve to starve? Sorry, "interrogate". I am assuming that M has truly escaped Hydra and this isn't a story about a brainwashed child on a mission to infiltrate Avengers. Seems like the latter scenario would make little sense.

I just want you to know that while it took me a bit to get to your comment, I literally haven't stopped thinking about it since you posted it, and I wanted to do it justice!

You bring up a good point on Steve showing some problematic behaviour. Currently, Steve is experiencing a fight-or-flight response to trauma: HYDRA returning. Not only that, he is from another time and went into the ice before the Geneva Convention that instituted better laws for the treatment of prisoners of war, civilians, etc. While he knows these laws, as per his duty as an active combatant, it's hard to separate the present from the past right now for him.

I've done a lot of thinking about how to help his character finish his lap with his trauma so he can finally get it together, but trauma presents differently in everyone, as we will soon see. The situation they're dealing with has no How-To manual, and mistakes will be made. It's the human condition. Luckily, these mistakes are ones they can recover from!

I really hope you stick around for more! Thank you for such a thought-provoking comment! I'm writing this response at 3 AM, so I don't really know if it's making any sense, I guess I'll find out tomorrow. (Thank you, Grammarly, for making this legible).
