Comment on Disventure Camp - Season 2 (kassie's cut)

  1. Hii! Glad to see another one of your analysis posts here! :)

Oliver doing the intro was definitely a more 'creative' later addition I had. I want to experiment a bit more with variety by having S2 make better use of the staff characters, whenever possible.

LMAO, I gotta say, Yul will DEFINITELY eat his own words in the future, I think you will love that moment when it comes since I have a very particular plan for it. ;D

I have to agree, I really liked how 'organic' that conversation came out, even if it wasn't meant to go that deep. I was trying to do a bit more of world-building with Christoff, as I usually did before - just to further cement Lake's knowledge of him.

I'm always glad to hear that I've been giving S2 Ally a bit more justice! :) It's a bit intimidating to write her sometimes, but I feel like I'm going in a good direction.

Maggy/Tess's friendship was honestly something I thought of on the spot, but just their entire dynamic already has so much potential. Antisocial and introverted (with a hidden feisty side) is honestly really interesting imo!

Karol's always a little hard to write (so is Yul tbh LMAO, but I always try to focus on his humor and humanizing him whenever I can, but not in a way that 'redeems' him) but I hope I end up doing a good job. She's honestly always been pretty 'bipolar' in the original DC, but I always really liked her for whatever reason. You kinda need to keep her Karen/obnoxious side to make her work, but she differs from Yul in the most unexpected things.

Aiden/Ally are conceptually a nice duo. I basically threw in a buuunch of nerdy references with Ally and kinda tied that in with Aiden's reality show nerd personality. They definitely might be worth expanding in AS, which is something ONC tried, but didn't really go all out with.

Yep, this challenge was totally original! I thought I'd actually switch things up for a bit, so I can save some of the 'DC-created' challenges for better occasions. It was really hard designing/writing it at first, but I pulled through. James's team swap was definitely one of my favorite highlights, it's mostly made to 'villainize him' a bit while simultaneously adding to his strategic side, since he did manage to wipe out Maggy, though it was by complete luck lol. I'm also trying a Riya-esque approach with him where he keeps doing these bad things while being conscious about it, until he lets his own jealous emotions take control of his thought process, especially when it comes to distancing Aiden from people, which is messed up, but James isn't a total monster. Just needs to work on himself.

Man, Maggy was a total blast to write here. I think focusing more on her 'sassy side' and trying to balance it with her shy meek girl persona really paid off. Lmao, the Plumbers Don't Wear Ties ref had me dyiiiing, I just totally had to throw it in somewhere lol xD

Yeah, I was definitely very self-conscious about the tie decision. Like... wow, I designed a totally new challenge just for it to end with a tie? I will say, definitely pulled an ONC with this move. I did want a double elimination here, but I also didn't want to rob the characters of development or write a boring med-evac, or just literally anything - so this was kinda a sacrifice I had to make, but I think it was worth it for the dynamics/interactions and just the whole novelty aspect of everything.

Lmaooo, yeah I felt soooo evil ;( but I did like this decision in the end, tbh. They both had shorter designed arcs (much like Alessio and Amelie) and I think them going here, while sad, feels narratively conclusive/satisfying, since they both left the show having gained new traits and growing as people. They're one of the few characters that are less about the win itself and more about self-growth, and all that. Kai is suuuuch a dummy here lol, but I think it's kind of what makes it part of his character. He's well-meaning, but very naive, to the point where he lacks self-awareness many of the times, but where he's JUST capable enough where most people don't really hate him + think of him as a burden. It's a pretty funny characterization. I was afraid the Yul stealing stuff would come off as 'unfinished' with James not really looking at the answers, but I like the conflict it makes between the two, and it kinda makes sense with James being less attentive due to his emotional circumstances (well, mostly Aiden lol)

Aiden's walking in Riya's foosteps! Lmao, as per usual, I'm still putting emphasis on Aiden/James's messy relationship that obviously wouldn't realistically click that well. Yul is definitely one of the top 'competitors/strategists' despite him being so despicable, but rest assured that he will get his karma before he knows it, lol. Aw, I was a bit worried that Ally/Tess/Maggy's little arc would be a bit too odd or rushed, but I think it was good that things worked out this way - Ally DID kinda need to be more isolated so she would have 'the incentive' to want to vote Maggy just so she could maybe talk to Tess more (even if not explicitly shown, I think she partially thinks of that but also feels guilty since she knows it's not truly Maggy's fault) and I really hoped Ally and Tess's 'final' (well, for now) talk would suffice, but there's always the finale to build up those things, too. :)

Thanks alot for reading, as usual! I'm glad the chapter was good - the vibes of the next one might just be different again. I think this is one of the more controversial chapters, haha. xD

    1. Glad you enjoy them ^^

I support that, giving more stuff for the staff to do be it Oliver doing an intro here or Marcus' chat with Lake in a prior chapter is always welcomed. I am curious how you plan for Riya's twist to enter the game but Yul's reaction should be worth the wait XD

Yeah I say in general you do well making these talking points feel organic and not just something forced, Lake & Rosa flowed well and Ally has gotten a lot more going for her compared to S2 canon so yeah say she is a reflection of the up in quality the character writing is for this cast largely.

I always felt Karol got the short stick in canon, do appreciate showing she has more sincere sides to her even if subtle especially in her convo contrast with Yul while keeping true to her core trait, and yeah he has more depth than canon without changing him being the worst guy in the room. Ally/Aiden certainly was something All-Stars tried...which is all i can say, but I'd be all for expanding on this on your take cause two nerds of different genres has potential.

Do think it was a fun original challenge, DC is a fun show but sometimes the limited indy budget shows int he "simple" challenges they have to work with, so appreciate this one with more going for it. James' swap move works well to show his villain side but unlike canon is a smart move on James part even if it is a shoot himself in the foot thing with Aiden. I think it is a fun balancing act with James, and you do show bits of the guy who cares deep down but he is a man whose toxic traits thus far win out even if he knows it is wrong. Is a fun adaptation of Riya's original arc.

Maggy was a bit of fun, and given she was going in this chapter, nice she got to show a more confident side in herself on her last challenge. It is a very ONC thing to do, but credit to you you least frame it as unfair in-universe and this is not something to celebrate, so it'd defiantly better than a med-evact situation or some other screwy twist that is tried to be painted as a happy situation (Jake's camp cheering Ally getting robbed in All-Stars etc.). I say my one concern is the Turtles getting screwed and being down to just Kai & Karol makes it really tricky to explain how they don't get wiped out pre-merge.

Yeah I get the work with Kai here, still a guy to get behind but man these last two votes I just side eye the man lmao beleive me I am sure I'll accept this result more with time, just an immediate gut punch because I did like the character work with Tess & especially Maggy and their bond was sweet. But far as short and sweet arcs go they did leave in a better place with Maggy more sure of herself and Tess figuratively dropping the false pills to take that first step to bettering herself. I say you balanced it with Yul/James, Yul is a scumbag but James ended up losing focus due to his emotional state which is a reflection of their alliance and how shaky it is becoming as one of them is all but remorseless and the other is starting to care "too much."

I hope Yul's karma comes this Rewrite is doing wonders to make him feel more of a threat, but still a scumbag I want to see get his. Aiden & Riya need a "lose all my friends" support group and yeah the path with him and James is a lot messier, but it makes sense James' toxic plays do not just get ignored and there is legit consequences he has to work through. Makes it more interesting and does paint the idea that if this is to work, James really does have to change those aspects of him which is a healthier message. The final goodbyes with Ally/Tess/Maggy were sweet and while I think there could've been more to build Ally's jealously of Maggy, it is a nice bow to things that least doesn't paint Ally as a villain who is sincerely regretful of what happened.

Yeah was a fun one, the eliminations here hurt but sure I'll appreciate the direction more as I let it sink in. Great work ^^
