OMG you SHOULD!! those are my favorite types of fanfics, which I'm sure is a huge surprise. I love seeing what types of characters other fans imagine populating my fave settings.
also re: reading. My husband was huge into ASOIAF when we met. He told me he thought I'd hate them, and he's always been pretty good at judging whether I'd like something, so I took him at his word. He thought Tolkien's writing was too slow but liked the movies. We both liked Wheel of Time. He finally managed to read LotR when our daughters were younger because he was reading it to them and he told me "Wow, now I understand. Tolkien is a genius."
But the girls don't really remember the story anymore because it's been years and I can't get them to read it--they agree with their father's initial impression that it's too slow. The only Tolkien story I got any of them hooked on successfully was Roverandom. But all three of my kids are obsessed with Harry Potter. I do think there's some peer influence wrt HP, in that although they all immediately loved it upon encountering it, all of their peers also love it. They exchange Hogwarts houses the same way they exchange phone numbers.
Ooh I have read ASOIAF (it's a good read but def more Mature Audience than Tolkien haha); it was interesting to note the differences with the show but of course the novels get maybe 2/3 of the way through the story and Martin clearly isn't anywhere near finishing (after dropping that hint about the appearance of unicorns in the most recent book (what!?!?!)) ... I'm afraid it'll be like with Wheel of Time and he won't finish it before he passes away... (I have not read WOT, but my brother-in-law did and said it's good until you get to the part where Jordan's son takes over trying to finish it for him and then it just feels off... my BIL did seem to react pretty badly to the Amazon show but that is what they say about reading the book first (it always ruins the movie lol... TBF the first couple seasons of GOT did stick to the books almost to the letter and then steadily strays farther and farther from them, which makes me all the more interested in finding out the story REALLY ends (if GRRM ever gets around to finishing it)... as far as adaptations go, with LOTR I read the books less than a year before the movies came out so I was nitpicking them like crazy lol...)
...goodness I had to google Roverandom lol... (shows how much I know haha)
Ahh husband and I are the total opposite of your BIL in that we both LOVE the WoT adaptation and consider it a stronger story than the books. It's the one and only time I've preferred a screen adaptation despite having read the books first.
Roverandom may not have the popularity of any of the middle-earth books, but it's super super cute.
Ahh. Lan crying doesn't seem incorrect to me maybe bc he reads so strongly as an Aragorn expy. He does MANLY STOIC crying
but also: 1. The literal premise of the books is that this story has played out with these characters but with variations, which I think makes it easier for me. I approach the show as a different turn of the wheel. Yay stories with reincarnation lmao 2. The characterization in the books is never 100% reliable. It's very close third person so you get, like: Rand, talking to a girl: I'm so bumbling and awkward. I sure wish I was like Perrin and Mat, they're both great with girls. *cut to Perrin talking to a girl* Perrin: Gee if this were Rand he'd know exactly what to say. I'm so bad with girls.
Mat: I'm very selfish and hedonistic. Totally into life for my own benefit. Screw everyone else. *passes some starving refugee children and gives them money* I did that bc the crying annoyed me, not bc I cared or anything.
Aviendha, blushing for the 289538535 time. The narrative, for the 289538535 time: Aviendha was blushing. She never blushed.
(however, yes, there are a lot of changes so it was inevitable that many book fans would be displeased. It definitely deviates way more than the LotR movies did.)
