aha, in retrospect i probably shouldn't be surprised that an ambitious fantasy novel has multiple perspectives. this does make my chain of misassumptions that much funnier, though.
i think my thought process went something like "son of the scarab king... okay, prologue down, so next chapter should have our main characters. loren's probably the titular son. ...a bit weird for a moth to be related to a 'scarab king', though. unless the name is more metaphorical? oh this tribe is pretty distant from any of this scarab king business at all, maybe loren actually isn't the son? could be secret heritage but no, probably not, hm."
i think even by the time i'd discarded that whole line of thinking, the initial assumption of loren as male stuck around. apologies for pronoun slip-up - not trying to justify it, but i figure you might appreciate seeing my bumbling first impressions
