That is one way I haven't seen Catnap's death be explained as. Yes, Theodore and Catnap are the same person in this AU. Watching his in game death again, I can see exactly what you are talking about; The small move backwards, avoiding looking at The Prototype, and the droop in his ears. Catnap then looks up at The Prototype as he turns his hand around, having his palm face towards him instead of away like when he first showed up. Catnap then hesitates for a moment before getting on his knees and getting into his paying motion. The Prototype then thrusts his hand forward, stabbing it through Catnap's mouth, piercing out the back of his head. Once that is done he drives his hand farther into Catnap, far enough to bend his finger up before dragging Catnap up with him.
I can see that as what happens in the game, Theodore trusted The Prototype and followed his plan to escape. After the escape failed, The Prototype now had another powerful ally, Theodore, now turned into Catnap. Catnap still trusted The Prototype. The Prototype told him about his plan and Catnap trusted him fully. The HoJ happens, and we all knows what happened.
All of that is true, but headcanons are their own thing, and this AU is filled with them. I HC that Theodore trusted The Prototype and the same stuff happened. Once Catnap came to be, he didn't trust The Prototype anymore, he knew what happened and that he couldn't be trusted. Catnap now also had friends in the form of the other Smiling Critters and they helped, without knowing, in breaking the last doubts Catnap had about ending his friendship with The Prototype. Theodore's heart stopped and The Prototype helped to save him in time. The creation of Catnap was rushed along with the help of The Prototype, and he put in a few things that helped him if he needed them. Thus is all the "Catnap was controlled" in my AU. Now Catnap's death goes from worshiping / sacrificing himself to being forced to kneel before being killed.
Please, don't take this as me trying to say you're wrong, I'm right. I want to thank you because I didn't see his death like that before but also tell you how I see it. Don't worry about the lengthy explanation, I read all of it and thought about it while watching Catnap's death, to see if any more details were there. I greatly respect your HC (I prefer the name 'private setting') and AU as it can widen the storyline between CatNap and 1006/BBI CatNap.
But it is important to remember the official or most possible one when you are out with your AU (I am not heading to you of course)
And I am also getting annoyed with so many people explain the death and without watching the details or even without rewind that multiple times and jumped to conclusions arbitrarily.
Oh yeah, and my thoughts can lead to CatNap still believes in 1006 and DogDay still loves him after he is dead. And DogDay is tired with him that his face becomes so terrible and without any emotions once he sees CatNap.
Actually the love of DogDay towards CatNap didn't fade, but dead, without disappearing. He only loves CatNap before THoJ, instead of the one believing 1006. (CatNap still want to get close with DogDay and he still loves him)

Yes, knowing what is official is important when writing. I try to stick with it unless I think my story can be better if I make my own private setting. I also agree with you on people jumping to conclusions. If there isn't enough evidence to say one way or the other, then it's fine, but in this case, Catnap's death happens right in front of you. If you chose to not watch it or not look at the details, then that's their own choice, but that doesn't make it right to write it away like nothing happened.
Catnap still believing in 1006 and Dogday still loving Catnap after he died... I think I'll take that and use it as a What If? scenario. Now the hate s3x and hat BDSM, I don't think I will be doing that... but my soul isn't too pure either. Look out for it, maybe one day I will write something like that.
