Serendipity

Summary:

There's only one solution when your engagement or proposal fails: to drink.

However, as both Kagome and Sesshomaru are soon to learn, a night of drinking can have its own consequences.

Chapter 1

Notes:

This fic begins with established Sesshomaru/Kagura and Kagome/Miroku, just as an FYI. It won't stay that way for long, however!

Chapter Text

He's going to propose. She knows he is. Why else would Adachi Miroku, her boyfriend of seven years, suggest the spontaneous, last-minute trip to Hawaii right after she's found a receipt for a ring in his pocket?

Higurashi Kagome packs her bags, humming happily to herself as she prepares for his arrival that evening.

She's waited long enough.

Across Tokyo, in a luxury jewelry store, Ito Sesshomaru studies the jewelry cases before him with an intensity that unnerves the staff. He does not care.

The ring he chooses for his intended has to be perfect—for Furukawa Kagura is as much perfection as he.

He leaves the store, pleased, and makes the reservation for dinner tonight, certain she will not refuse.

Chapter Text

Kagome checks her phone as she waits outside for her soon-to-be fiancé to show up. Their text exchange last night confirms the time, but he's late. That's not exactly abnormal, but she calls him anyway to see where he is.

He doesn't answer.

Shrugging, she dials his work number, figuring maybe he got caught up with a last-minute client at the brewery.

He left early today to prepare for his trip, she's told by one of the other employees. Maybe he's late preparing a surprise.

She hangs up and eyes the time. They'll miss their flight if he's too late, so she'll just have to go to the airport herself and meet him and his 'surprise' there. She wonders what he's planning; he's not exactly great at keeping secrets. Is it the ring? Maybe he's trying to pick it up now.

She sends him a text as she orders a cab, humming to herself. Hawaii! It's almost time.

Chapter Text

Miroku has the tickets, so Kagome waits in the main area of the airport. She keeps one hand on her luggage while the other holds the lavender matcha tea she'd purchased while she waits. She's tried calling and texting her boyfriend several more times since she left home, but he still doesn't answer.

It must be one hell of a surprise, she thinks.

Maybe he's getting flowers to propose with. Or maybe—

There he is!

She smiles as she sees him walk up to one of the kiosks to print the tickets. He doesn't see her, so she decides to walk up and surprise him.

She moves forward, but in the end, it's Kagome who's surprised when another woman she doesn't recognize wraps her arms around Kagome's boyfriend and grins as he hands her one of the boarding passes.

Chapter Text

Kagome's hands fist. She helped pay for those tickets; the money came from their joint account. Miroku might be cheating, but she'll be damned if she'll sit back and let him go on the trip she helped pay for with his side piece.

Before he has time to react, she's at his side, taking the ticket that should have been hers.

"What are you—" Miroku stops short as he meets her eyes. "Kagome."

"Do you know her, Adachi-san?" the woman at his side glances between them, her brown eyes wide with surprise.

Miroku laughs awkwardly as he rubs the back of his neck. "She's an old friend," he says quickly, giving Kagome a stern look, "playing a rather poor joke, my dear."

My dear?

Something inside Kagome snaps.

Chapter Text

Miroku seems to realize the situation he's in and reaches for the other woman's arm. "We should hurry, my dear, before we miss our—"

"Miroku." Kagome takes a deep breath as she resists the urge to tear up the ticket. It would be a pointless endeavour, anyway, when he can just print off another one. "You're going to repay e—"

She stops short when she sees the flash of gold on the woman's fingers as she grips Miroku's arm.

The ring.

The other woman is wearing her ring.

Chapter Text

Sesshomaru has planned everything down to the smallest detail, and so he stands with confidence in the hotel room rented under his name. No one knows he is dating Furukawa Kagura—no one suspects Kagura is dating anyone—so there is no risk of being discovered together.

The door opens, and Kagura walks into the room without so much as glancing around at the décor. "Ugh, it's been a day," she grumbles, dropping down on the bed. She falls back and closes her eyes. "I could really use a massage right now, Sesshomaru."

"Will you not partake of the meal first?" Sesshomaru will not budge on this as he gestures towards the room service he's ordered.

Everything will go according to plan.

Chapter Text

Kagura doesn't so much as look at the meal. "I'm not eating anything." She sighs as she closes her eyes. "The director is going for a specific look with this new film."

Sesshomaru's lips thin as he retrieves the small box from one of the covered containers on the dine-in cart.

"I can't stay long, anyway," she continues breezily, sitting up. She frowns when she sees him. "Come on, Sesshomaru, don't be like this. I'll pay for the room service, okay?" She reaches out to grab him by the arm. "Look, it's been a rough week. Just come here and pamper me a little, okay?"

He allows her to pull him onto the bed beside her, but he will not be deterred from his goal.

He will propose today.

Chapter Text

Kagura sighs when he doesn't come over to massage her as she bade. "Look," she says, reaching for her purse, "maybe I should get going. I have a busy schedule this afternoon, anyway, and—"

"Here." He hands her the box as she rises to leave. It is now or never.

She takes it. "Ooh, I hope it's that ruby bracelet I was eying," she says with a small smile, "but as long as it's not something silly, like a diamond ri—" She stops short as she opens it, and then abruptly, she's shoving the box into his hand before he can even pop the question. "I can't, Sesshomaru. You, of all people, know that I can't."

Chapter 9

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

It's times like these when a girl really needs her best friend, but Shiori is honeymooning on the other side of the country. Given that Shiori is now married to Kagome's other best friend, Jinenji, there's only one thing she can do.

Kagome walks into the bar at a hotel right near the airport and orders a drink.

She sits down, unsurprised that, at this hour, there's only one other occupant at the bar and, judging by the empty glasses in front of him, he's either an alcoholic, or he's got as good a reason as she has to drink.

Just to be safe, Kagome decides that she's going to pretend he's not even there.

Notes:

You'll see this note on my other ongoing fics as they update throughout the week, but you've all probably noticed by now that I've been wrapping up the majority of my ongoing fics over the last couple of months (aside from Progenitor; don't worry, that one still has a bit to go!). I've also switched to drabble fics for new work.

There's a reason for that! I just launched my first story on Amazon this weekend (and then spent all weekend sorting out the kinks with self-publishing, lol). If you like what I write and want to support me, please check out 'Indulge' by Anna Trolley on Amazon (US link here but it's available in other regions: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F2ZL3GGD). If you enjoy the story, please consider leaving a review; it helps a lot with Amazon's algorithm.

This romance series I've launched will feature a twist on ABO focusing on healthy, consensual relationships with a good bit of steam and spice. The first story is live now, and I'm working on the next one as we speak and hope to have it ready to go soon.

Thanks again for all your love, support, and feedback over the last 12 years since I first started writing fanfiction in 2013. It has honestly meant the world to me. I haven't been able to reply to every review, but I want you all to know that I've laughed, cried, and cheered alongside you guys all these years. 💙

Wishing you all the best,
Troll

Chapter Text

Kagome is on her third drink when the mysterious other occupant at the bar pulls out a ring box and attempts to throw it in the trash.

He misses.

"What're you doing?" She rushes over, but in her drunken state—she's always been something of a lightweight—it's more of a stumble than anything as she scoops up the box and opens it to see a beautiful engagement ring. "What's wrong with you?" She sniffles. "Don't you know how long women wait to get a ring like this?"

"It is perfect, is it not?" At her nod, he waves a dismissive hand. "You may keep it. I certainly have no use for it now."

Chapter Text

Kagome stirs, closing her eyes immediately after opening them when the morning sun streaming through the window threatens to punish her for existing. She's never drinking again

She reaches for her phone, but it's not where it usually is on the floor next to her low bed. In fact, the floor isn't there at all. All she finds is air.

Her eyes fly open, and this time, she sees her phone on a desk across from the bed—and a glittering ring on her left hand.

"What," she manages, brushing her hair out of her face, "did I do?"

Chapter Text

She registers the sound of the shower, and it's only then that Kagome realizes she is not alone.

She lets out a breath. If she's indeed married now—and all the signs indicate that she is—then there's only one thing she can do about her situation now.

The shower turns off, and she quickly rises from the bed, quicky combing her hair with her fingers. She's in the middle of righting her clothes when the bathroom door opens.

"You are awake."

"Mmm. I hope your schedule's free today," she doesn't even glance up as she adjusts her skirt, "because we're getting a divorce."

Chapter Text

"So you were not sincere."

She jerks her head up at that and gapes at the man before her—no, man is incorrect, for while he is definitely male, it's obvious he is not a man. His inhuman beauty, coupled with the markings on his face, make that much clear. "Excuse me?"

He lifts his chin. "You assured this one that you kept your promises, woman. Was this a lie?"

Chapter Text

Promises? Kagome attempts to recall the events from the day before. Miroku, his new wife, the airport—this, she remembers clearly. Then there is the bar and way too many peach bellinis, and a silver haired man and a ring

She glances down at her hand.

It is the same exact ring.

It is the same exact man.

She exhales. "Well, shit."

Chapter Text

Kagome does not, however, remember the promise he's referring to, and her memory of the nuptials themselves is a confusing haze filled with white coats, large dogs, and a kaleidoscope of lights. "For the sake of argument," she says, sighing, "what exactly did I promise?"

The man produces his cell phone, and it strikes her then that she doesn't even know his name.

She's about to ask when he taps a video.

Kagome watches it, horrified.

I'm never drinking again.

Chapter Text

"You're my favorite husband," drunk Kagome says in the video, clinging to man's arm. "Oops, hehe! I guess we're not married yet! Hey!" She turns to the clerk who is eying them with trepidation. "How long does it take to get married around here, anyway?"

The clerk coughs into his hand. "Ah, perhaps you should come back when you're—"

"Are you trying to stop me from having married sex?" Drunk Kagome gasps as she raises her voice. "Should we just have unmarried sex here instead?"

Sober Kagome groans as she buries her face in her hands. Drunk Kagome is a menace.

Chapter Text

"One of my colleagues recorded this," he says before she can ask why he has the video. "For posterity, I believe." He slides the phone into his pocket.

Kagome barely manages to keep from calling the coworker an idiot. Glass houses and all. "Lucky for us," she grumbles.

"Indeed."

She exhales. "Look, let's start over, okay?" She holds out a hand. "I'm Higurashi Kagome—"

"Ito," he corrects her calmly. "After what occurred yesterday, you are now Ito Kagome." He pauses meaningfully. "My wife."

Chapter Text

Kagome decides there's no reason to argue the point over what her name is or isn't. When they divorce, she'll just change it back, anyway. "Look, I—" She stops when her phone vibrates, and she looks down to see a bombardment of texts congratulating her on her marriage.

Drunk Kagome apparently has told everyone.

Including her mother.

Chapter Text

"This," Kagome grumbles, pinching the bridge of her nose as she lowers her phone, "is a mess." She's going to have a lot of explaining to do, especially when everyone knows who her boyfriend is. Was, she reminds herself. "I don't know how I'm going to explain any of this."

Her new husband settles down on the bed as he dries his hair. "Then do not."

"It's not that easy," she grumbles.

"That is only because you have complicated it, wife."

Chapter Text

Kagome eyes him, wondering why he's so nonchalant about the entire situation. "Why aren't you bothered by this," she hesitates as she realizes that she doesn't know his full name, "Ito-san? It's not like you didn't get dumped yesterday, too."

He sniffs. "I was not 'dumped.' It was simply decided that the arrangement did not suit."

"You bought a ring to propose," she says, crossing her arms. "You got dumped, Ito-san."

Chapter Text

His lips thin as he sets the towel he's been using to dry his hair aside. "What are your objections, wife? I am wealthy, established, and successful. I own my own home, three vehicles, and can afford to vacation wherever I please."

Kagome wants to say something like she'd wanted to marry for love, but that feels stupid now because she hadn't. "I'm not looking for a handout—"

His brow raise. "Giving to one's wife is hardly a handout."

Chapter Text

"Look," Kagome says, pinching the bridge of her nose as she tries to find the best way to disentangle herself from the heavy consequences of her drunken mistake, "I appreciate the effort you're making, Ito-san, I do, and I won't say this all doesn't sound tempting—it does—but this isn't something that—"

"I would not stray," he murmurs then, his golden eyes capturing her own as he leans forward. "Unlike the faithless cur who abandoned you yesterday, I would not stray, wife."

Chapter Text

And then she sees the text from Miroku.

Text is a bit of an understatement. It's a wall of dialogue lambasting her for getting married after she'd gone off yesterday on him for cheating on her. How dare she toss around accusations when she's been doing the same thing? It's a pity marriage, a mistake, and it won't last. They both know who she really wants to marry. She's going to regret it.

Something inside her snaps.

"Let's do this." Kagome sets her phone face down. "The marriage, I mean," she explains as though it's needed. "Let's do it, Ito-san."

Chapter Text

Sesshomaru's brows raise, but he doesn't question her capitulation. She has agreed; that is enough. "Very well," he says, inclining his head as he hides the triumph in his eyes. "I will handle the arrangements." If he does not, she might find cause to change her mind.

"Arrangements?" His wife blinks.

"The move, wife." A thrum of pleasure runs through him at the claim. She is not at all what he had expected. When her mouth opens, he continues, "I have no interest in a marriage in name alone, Kagome."

It is clear, however, that she had expected exactly that.

Chapter Text

Kagome decides now's the time to set up some boundaries, but as she starts to talk, her phone goes off again. And again and again and again.

Damn him.

Her new husband glances at her phone. "I presume," he says with a quirked brow, "that 'hope a shark eats your balls in Hawaii' would be him."

Kagome sighs, but she's not about to change drunk Kagome's nickname for Miroku in her phone, either. "Unfortunately. I should really block his number."

"Do you wish for a honeymoon?"

She blinks. "Huh?"

"A honeymoon." He smirks. "Do you wish to honeymoon in Hawaii?"

Chapter Text

Kagome doesn't even hesitate. "No." She's not going to take a trip just to try and prove something.

His brows raise. "Then perhaps there is another—"

"Don't you have a job?" She crosses her arms. "I know my job is one I can do anywhere," one of the perks of being an author, "but I'm pretty sure yours can't. You work at a hospital, right?" She remembers that much.

"Hnn." He inclines his head. "I do not take leave."

"Well, there you go." She waves a hand.

"Therefore," he continues, "I have incurred a great deal that may be used."

Chapter Text

"Well, save it for something else." Kagome brushes the hair back from her face as she slowly exhales. "I'm not taking a trip just to rub my drunken mistake in my ex-boyfriend's face. I'll pass." What was the point? She didn't care what Miroku thought, not now, and besides, he'd figure out pretty quickly that she and her new husband aren't intimate. "Besides, I don't see you over here planning to do that with your ex."

"It was amicable." He lifts his chin.

"Yeah?" She crosses her arms as his jaw tightens. "Amicable, huh? And I'm the queen of England."

Chapter Text

Kagome eyes the car in the hotel parking lot. "What, exactly, do you do at the hospital, Ito-san?" she asks, turning to her new husband. She may have argued against a honeymoon for several reasons, but clearly, money isn't a problem. Either her new husband comes from money, or he's very well paid.

He unlocks the car. "Perhaps I should have advised you sooner," he replies, lips quirking as he opens the driver door, "that it should be Ito-sensei."

Oh damn. He's a doctor. Her breath catches.

"But I would hope that my wife would simply address me as Sesshomaru."

Chapter Text

Kagome eyes the upscale neighborhood they're driving through with more than a little trepidation. She comes from a shrine family, so her own family is by no means poor, but she certainly feels that way now as they drive through.

They're way too expensive.

She starts when Sesshomaru moves to park. He may be a doctor, but these homes are clearly beyond his salary. She opens her mouth to ask why they stopped, but she doesn't get the chance as his phone suddenly rings. Kagome has just a moment to see the name before he declines the call.

Furukawa Kagura.

Chapter Text

A moment later, his phone rings again, and the same name once more appears on the digital screen of his car before Sesshomaru ends the call. Twice more, the process repeats before Kagome tentatively asks, "Aren't you going to answer that?" It seems ridiculous to keep denying the call when it's obvious that the woman is just going to keep calling back.

"There is no need," he replies flatly. His displeasure is obvious, and it's only then that she connects the dots.

Furukawa Kagura must be his ex—the same woman he'd intended to marry before she'd rejected his proposal.

Chapter Text

The next time the phone rings, Kagome moves before he can and accepts the call for him. She's interfering, but she can't just sit here and watch this. If his ex decides to get back with him, and so does he, then Kagome will do the right thing and drag his ass back to get divorced. It doesn't make any sense for both of them to be miserable.

"Seriously, Sesshomaru," the woman hisses as the call connects. "Do you even realize how long I've been calling you?"

Sesshomaru gives Kagome a pointed look as he growls, "I do not care."

Chapter Text

Sesshomaru moves to end the call, but before he has the opportunity, Kagura growls, "You ass. Have you even checked your phone today? The news? Anything?"

"No." Why would he? He has seen her text notifications, but he does not care. He has no desire to engage with his ex-girlfriend, and he certainly has no interest in what she does with her life now that they are over.

And they are over. He is not about to welcome Kagura back after her scathing rejection.

"Are you serious?" Kagura snarls. "How can you possibly be so dense? We were seen, Sesshomaru!"

Chapter Text

"Tell your manager to handle it." Sesshomaru sounds completely unrepentant, and Kagome can't help but wonder at the backstory between the two. Manager would certainly imply that—

"Are you serious right now?" Kagura's voice raises. "Do you know what'll happen if I just deny it outright? I'll—"

He shrugs. "It is not my problem."

"It will be when the media shows up at your family's hospital, you arrogant ass. And mark my words," Kagura snaps, "they will show up. Besides," she continues with all the finesse of a bulldozer, "you're still my boyfriend, Sesshomaru, even if—"

"I am married, Kagura."

Chapter Text

Kagome's mouth falls open, but it's nothing compared to the shock in Kagura's voice. "You're—what?"

"Married," he replies calmly, but Kagome sees the smug smile on his lips. He's enjoying this. "It is an arrangement where two people—"

"I know what marriage is, asshole," Kagura snaps. "I just don't—never mind." She exhales. "This is perfect. If you went and did something stupid, like marry the first idiot who asked," Kagome flinches, "fine. You can tell everyone you're married, then, and when all of this finally dies down," she lets out another breath, "you'll get a divorce. It's perfect."

Chapter Text

It takes Kagome a moment to understand what Kagura is suggesting, but Sesshomaru is far quicker.

"You want this one to remain married to another woman," he replies, running his hands through his hair as his jaw tightens, "and then, when it is convenient for you alone, divorce that woman and then return to you once more?"

"Oh, don't be so dramatic." Kagura sniffs. "You make it sound like it's a bad thing, but we both know it's the best option. After all," she continues smugly, "you love me."

Kagome notices that Kagura makes no grand declarations of her own.

Chapter Text

Sesshomaru hangs up before Kagura has the chance to say anything else. Neither of them say anything then as they remain buckled into their seats.

It doesn't escape Kagome's notice that both of them had been involved with selfish people who seem incapable of putting others first. Miroku had been cheating on her for who knows how long, and Kagura, it seems, cares more about her career than she ever cared for her man.

No, she decides then, they simply didn't want to put others first. And that's worse.

"I'm sorry," she murmurs then. "I shouldn't have accepted the call."

Chapter Text

Sesshomaru eyes her as he calmly replies, "You did not act out of malice." He picks up his phone. "It is I who erred when I did not block her."

She watches him do so now and wonders what he's thinking about. She doesn't think he wants to go back to Kagura—if anything, he's made it clear that he doesn't—but that doesn't mean he'll be okay with watching her career tank, either. Kagura is, after all, a woman he'd wanted to marry. That has to mean something. "Do you want to help her?"

He doesn't even hesitate. "No."

Chapter Text

She can't think of anything to say to that. It's clear that he has no interest in aiding his ex further, but while she gets it, she also feels more than a little guilty about it, too.

"Do you wish to remain in the car, Kagome?"

She blinks as she realizes he has one hand on his door. "Here?" She glances around, certain they're in the wrong place, but then she suddenly remembers Kagura's words. 'It will be when the media shows up at your family's hospital, you arrogant ass.'

His family owns a hospital, and probably more.

Sesshomaru's loaded.

Chapter Text

Kagome takes a deep breath, grounding herself. It's not her first time in wealthy surroundings, after all; Miroku's family is also a shrine family, but one far more influential than her own. While Kagome's family is relatively new, Miroku comes from a long line of monks on both sides of his family, though he himself has eschewed that calling and left the family temple in the hands of his younger brother.

"A key is already being created."

She turns to see Sesshomaru typing into a digital keypad.

"However," he continues as the keypad chimes, "the digital passcode is already yours."

Chapter Text

Kagome follows him through the gate without paying a lick of attention to her surroundings. Unless he'd given her the code while they'd been drunk out of their minds—and she can't exactly rule that out, either—she definitely doesn't have it. "Ito-san—er, Ito-sensei," she corrects as he strides towards the front door, "I don't—"

His phone rings again. He pulls it out of his pocket and sighs before swiping to answer it. "Haha-ue."

Well, damn. It's his mother.

"Sesshomaru." He enters the passcode at the door. "Did you not even consider inviting your poor mother to the ceremony?"

Chapter 41

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

"You are not even in the country, Haha-ue." Sesshomaru opens the door and gestures for Kagome to step inside.

She stops short as she sees the quiet wealth of his home, awed yet unsurprised.

"I have a private jet." His mother huffs as he closes the door behind them. "What is the point of doing so if I cannot utilize it whenever I wish?"

A private jet? Kagome gapes. She's realized by now that he's rich, but this is a whole other level.

"It is the company jet." He sniffs. "Do not abuse your power for something so frivolous, Haha-ue."

Notes:

It's a good day today, and I've got some good news to share! To celebrate my 2nd novella's release (Amazon just approved and listed the book last night!), I'm updating all my drabbles today! (If you're interested in continuing to follow the series and pick up this book, you can do so here. Book 2 is Grumpy x Sunshine trope, so probably just a LITTLE familiar to all of us, haha!)

Happy reading, all!

Chapter Text

Sesshomaru ends the call, but before Kagome can ask him any of her burning questions, he says, "You will find the sunroom suitable." He pockets the phone and, ignoring her bemusement, continues, "It will require a few purchases, but you will find it otherwise meets your desires, Kagome."

"To sleep in?" She tries to maintain a polite smile, though she wonders if he's lost his mind. He insists they remain married, yet he tells her to sleep in the sunroom?

He snorts. "To write in. Did you not state you wish to work in a bright room full of plants?"

Chapter Text

Kagome eyes the sunroom her new husband has given her as he steps away to answer another phone call. It's a haven for a multitude of plants, some domestic and some exotic, all of which have been exceptionally well-tended, including three bonsai that are clearly several decades old.

It's beautiful.

It's the perfect place to write her next book. She can already picture her dream desk here, along with the cozy reading corner she's always dreamed of having...

"I apologize, Kagome," Sesshomaru says then, returning to her with phone and keys in hand, "but I am needed at the hospital."

Chapter 44

Notes:

My computer is all packed up as we begin our moving process, so here I am, typing on my phone for the next few weeks. 😩

Chapter Text

The entire emergency room appears in disarray as Sesshomaru walks in, but to his well-trained eye, everything is working as it should. Though gurneys are everywhere, the nurses are diligently checking in patients and doing all they can to triage them.

The task is a daunting one.

It’s no wonder Tanaka called him in on his day off. No doubt everyone else who can be has also been called in.

“Ito-sensei!” The charge nurse rushes over to him with obvious relief.

“I will scrub down,” Sesshomaru replies, eying the pandemonium the bus accident has caused, “and we will begin, Jaken.”

Chapter 45

Notes:

Meghna insisted on another chapter today 😒

Chapter Text

Kagome slumps into the bar stool as she sets her wallet on the counter. It’s been a day. Between shopping for new quality furniture she could easily afford—she left both Sesshomaru’s credit card and his car keys for his second car at home—and traveling around public transportation, she’s exhausted.

But it doesn’t seem prudent to use his money and his car now.

“You look like you could use a drink.” She looks up to see a wolfish grin beneath a pair of blue eyes. “What’ll yah have, onee-san? We’ve got beer, beer, and, you guessed it, more beer.”

Chapter Text

“Guess I’m having beer then, thank you,” Kagome says lightly, and, eying the taps, she orders the super dry Asahi. She doesn’t comment on the odd address, mostly because it’s more conversation than she’s really in the mood for.

But still, it’s a little irksome when a man who looks about her age assumes she’s older than him.

Clearly, she needs to up her moisturizer routine.

“Good choice.” The bartender grins as he pulls out a glass. In no short order, a foaming beer is placed in front of her. “So,” he leans forward on the bar, “what’s eating yah?”

Chapter Text

Kagome takes a long drink of her beer. She’s not about to unburden herself to someone she doesn’t even know, especially not over something so private. “I’m good, thanks.”

The man grins again. “You sure are.”

She raises her brows, trying to decide if he’s flirting or not. If he is, he’d have to be an idiot not to see the stunning ring on her finger. “I can’t stay long, anyway,” she says, deciding to inform him in a roundabout way to be safe. “My husband will be waiting for me.”

The bartender chuckles. “Understood.” He winks. “So is mine.”

Chapter Text

If he’d been human, the exhaustion of the day would have been visible on his countenance, just as it is on his human colleagues.

Fortunately, Sesshomaru is not human. He still has plenty of energy to see himself home and attend to his new wife.

Wife. Pleasure thrums through him.

“I’m off,” he says to the charge nurse as he pulls out his keys. His patients are all stable, and the necessary surgeries have been completed.

Jaken looks mournful. “So soon, Ito-sensei?”

Sesshomaru inclines his head. He will not repeat himself. “Notify me at once if there is a need.”

Chapter Text

Kagome fumbles with the door, clearly a little more sloshed than she’d initially believed. Damn, she’s more of a lightweight than she’d expected, and she can only blame the general lack of work parties and social drinking events in her life.

She jostles the key again. Nothing happens.

Maybe the key is upside down. She turns it and tries again.

Nope.

Maybe she’s got the angle wrong. She adjusts, but—

Nothing.

“Damn.” She slaps the door. “Why isn’t it working?”

“Because you moved out yesterday.” Her old landlord gives her a sour look. “The keys have already been changed, Higurashi-san.”

Chapter 50

Notes:

Kagome turns to Yamaguchi Kikyo, who looks quite smug about the situation. It’s no secret the landlord never approved of Kagome’s occupation as a smut writer, and would’ve evicted her if Kikyo had found cause. “Moved out?”

Sesshomaru had mentioned moving, but—

“Yes. Perhaps you were too drunk to recall,” Kikyo sniffs, “but I recall quite vividly how you stormed in here demanding to break the lease so you could move in with your paramour. A product of your life in sin, no doubt.” Kikyo lifts her chin. “I suggest you return to it before the police are summoned again.”

Chapter Text

Kagome doesn’t know where to start between a second thought of police involvement—as apparently there already has been a first?—and the fact that she herself is the one responsible for her own predicament.

Either way, it’s enough to sober her ass up.

“I apologize, Yamaguchi-san,” she says with an embarrassed bow.

“Hmph.” Kikyo crosses her arms. “You should be grateful I didn’t choose to press charges.”

Kagome catches sight of the new smartwatch on her former landlady’s arm, and wonders then if Kikyo chose not to—or was persuaded not to.

Just what else did drunk Kagome do?

Chapter Text

As it turns out, drunk Kagome has done far more than terminate her lease and marry the first guy she’d talked to at a bar.

She’d also drained her savings account dry—and on what?—which severely limits her options if the marriage fails. She’ll have no choice now but to move back home.

“I’m an idiot,” she repeats as she trudges to her new home from the nearest train station.

“I would be inclined to agree.”

She jerks her head up to see her new husband before her, a look of irritation on his face, and she just sighs.

Chapter Text

She feels like a child caught with their hand in the cookie jar by their mom, and it’s not fair. He’s her husband, a stranger, an unknown—and he’s all that stands between her and a return to her family’s shrine where her grandpa will chastise her career and insist it’s time to take up the family calling.

“I, er—” She what?

“You did not take the car.” He sounds extremely displeased, though his expression gives nothing away. “Nor did you take the card left for your use. Do you regret it?”

Regret? “The…card?”

His lips thin. “The marriage.”
