Chat: my lady. you asked me for words of wisdom, but i’ve realized i have none. you, as always, have left me speechless. but for you, i’ll try to find the words. yes, it’s a date. even though adrien didn’t realize it when he asked you because, despite your unwarranted belief in him, he is an absolute idiot. he’s an idiot for not realizing what an amazing, incredible girl he had right in front of him this whole time. he’s an idiot for hiding behind bad puns and cheap flirting when all he wanted to do was hold your hand and tell you how wonderful you are. the truth is, it doesn’t matter if you spill your drink, or forget how to talk. you could wear a trashbag and still be the most beautiful girl in the world. he’ll love you no matter what, because he’s loved you since the day you met. i’m sorry it took me so long to reply, but i’ve spent the last two hours trying to find the right words. and, even with all of this, i still haven’t said them. but that’s ok. you’ll hear them in a second. i’ll see you soon, my lady.❤️

Chapter Text

Marinette heard the ringing of her doorbell as if it had struck through a thick haze of fog. She was still reeling from Chat’s message. The words were beautiful, but senseless. There was only one thing it could mean, but it was — impossible. To even think it, to even hope for it, was something Marinette couldn’t bring herself to do. 

If she was wrong, it would break her heart.

“Marinette, honey, Adrien’s here!”

Right. Adrien. 

He was early.

“Let him up, Maman,” Marinette called, struggling to raise her voice above a hoarse whisper. She had to collect herself before Adrien got here. He couldn’t see her like this.

(He has seen you like this, has seen you windswept and broken down and at your worst, you’ve cried on his shoulder and he’s cried on yours—)

“Marinette.”

Marinette lifted her eyes to meet his, bright but wildly nervous. The slight flaw calmed her nerves a bit. Imagine he’s Chat.

Did she even have to imagine?

Her eyes flickered down to the bouquet of pink roses in his hands. They were beautiful, but her gaze skipped straight past them, to the silver ring on his left hand. The ring that he had worn every day, without fail, since the first day she had met him.

“Adrien, I—”

“I’m Chat Noir!”

Adrien himself looked surprised at his blunt admission. He cleared his throat, and tried again. “Um. I’m Chat Noir? And I’m in love with you.”

For a moment, he and Marinette simply blinked at each other.

Adrien’s eyes looked panicked. “These— These are for you!” he rushed out, thrusting the bouquet forwards. Marinette took a small step towards him, grasping the flowers daintily. 

“Thank you?” she said, bewildered. “I’ll. Um. I’ll put them in water.” Marinette looked around before realizing that she did not, in fact, have any water.

“I’ll get them, Marinette!” Tikki buzzed happily, whizzing past her to grab the flowers in her tiny paws.

“Oh, thanks, Ti— Tikki!” Marinette stammered, watching her flit down to the kitchen with wide eyes. She looked back at Adrien, panicked, before she realized. “Oh. It doesn’t even matter, does it?”

Adrien, still staring at the spot Tikki had disappeared, shrugged.

“Do you want to— sit down, maybe?” Marinette guessed. “I need to, at least. I think I might throw up.”

Adrien looked up at her statement, a wildly concerned look twisting his features. “Oh, God. Is it that bad? That I’m—” he cut off helplessly, gesturing around himself.

Marinette wanted to cry. Bad? Was he out of his mind? “No, Adrien. It’s not bad at all.” He didn’t look too convinced.

Marinette sighed, and patted the bed beside her, a clear invitation to sit down. “It’s just. A lot. Give me a second to process.”

When he still didn’t move, she raised an eyebrow. “I won’t bite, I swear.”

A beat of silence went by, and they both flushed red. 

“Unless— I mean, you don’t have to sit! You could. Stand? Standing is— cool.”

Marinette groaned, putting her head in her hands. “Oh my God. I’m so fucking sorry.”

Adrien finally cracked, breaking out into little huffs of laughter. “It’s alright. Standing is pretty cool,” he teased lightly, coming to sit beside her. “But I think I’ll sit, if that’s okay with you.”

“Go ahead,” Marinette mumbled through her hands. It sounded a little bit more like gm ahmed, but Adrien seemed to understand her all the same.

There was another, less awkward, beat of silence. Marinette stared at the floor, to where Adrien was dangling his feet off the edge of the bed, kicking them lightly back and forth. His sneakers were immaculate, except for a small scuff at his left toe. 

It was so fucking cute.

“Holy shit,” Marinette realized, despairing even more, “I’m the dumbass co-worker.”

Adrien grinned. “I’m Hypothetical Chad.”

Marinette squinted at him. “How much did Alya tell you?”

“Nothing!” Adrien squeaked, immediately looking very guilty.

“Mm hm. God. I could ring her fucking neck right now.”

“Um. I’m actually— pretty grateful?” Adrien tried hesitantly. “Unless you hate me now. In that case, this is the worst day of my life.”

Marinette laughed despite herself. “Chat, you’re so dramatic,” she grinned, the words coming out on instinct. They both froze once they were out, though, the newness of the situation coming right back through.

“Um. Would a cat pun help break the ice?” Adrien asked hopefully.

“Don’t you dare.”

“…Please?”

Marinette squinted at him, before sighing. “One. Make it count.”

Adrien immediately brightened, looking so much like Chat she could cry. “Okay, okay. What did the cat say to the baker after tipping over his flour?”

“What.”

Adrien was practically vibrating. “You’ve got to be kitten me. That was a cat-astrophe!” 

He held out his hands, waiting expectantly. When nothing came, he nudged her. “Good, right?”

Marinette let out a loud groan, shaking her head slowly. “I take back everything I ever said about liking you. You are literally the worst.” She narrowed her eyes. “Also, that was technically two.”

Adrien grinned. “I know! Two- fur- one!”

“Get the fuck out of my house.”

Adrien snorted, and Marinette met his eye, struggling to keep a straight face. After a second, the reality of the situation crashed down on her, and her eye twitched. Her twitching eye was quickly followed by her twitching mouth, and she could hold it no longer. She laughed until her stomach hurt, clutching tightly onto Adrien’s shoulder for balance. 

It no longer mattered that he was Adrien Agreste. Right now, he was just Chat, and he was laughing right alongside her.

Marinette had a feeling they would be just fine.

🐞 🐱 🐞

“Wait, so the constipation meds were for Master Fu?”

“Yes! I swear, that was the worst day of my fucking life. I handed the letter to the pharmacy lady, and she was like ‘oh, this is really sweet, but I’m actually taken.’”

“Oh my God. Did she think a random girl she’d never seen before was just straight-up confessing her love?”

“I fucking guess! I don’t know, maybe weird shit goes down at pharmacies. What would I know?”

Adrien grinned, a small, feral thing that made Marinette’s heart do the cha-cha slide. “You know what this means?”

Marinette squinted at him. “What?”

“You have to change your group chat name!”

“Oh, fuck you—”

“Yep! Let me see your phone, I’ll do it for you—”

“Don’t you dare, Adrien!”

“Oh my God we could have,” Adrien wheezed out, honest-to-God clutching his stomach , “matching nicknames!”

“Absolutely not—”

“Constipation girl!” Adrien crowed, waggling Marinette’s phone like a prize. “You’re too late, I changed it—”

“You did not—”

“See for yourself!”

Sure enough, the little letters scrolled proudly across Marinette’s phone screen, a little triumphant badge of honor.

Ladybug🐞 changed their name to constipation girl!

“I can just change it back, you know.”

“You won’t,” Adrien said confidently.

He was right, though. She wouldn’t.

Marinette’s phone buzzed a second time, and she picked it up instantly, fully expecting mockery from Chloe or Alya.

Predictably, Alya’s picture lit up the screen with an incoming call.

Adrien raised an eyebrow. “Sorry, is this a girls-only chat? Do I need to plug my ears?”

Marinette snorted, shoving him at the shoulder. “Shut up, Chaton.”

Adrien shivered at that, a full-body movement that made them both stop in their tracks. 

“Um.”

“Right, then,” Marinette said slowly, filing that information for later. Adrien had turned pink up to his ears, which was adorable as hell.

“Answer your phone,” he mumbled, embarrassed. Marinette laughed as she did so, ruffling his hair lightly.

“Nothing to be embarrassed of, kitty,” she grinned.

“Oh. Mari, girl, you do realize you already picked up the phone?”

Marinette flushed. “Sorry, Alya!”

“Holy shit. I was just calling to see how the date went, but— are you still with him? It’s been three hours!”

Marinette blinked. “The date!” Shit.

Adrien sat up straight. “Oh my God, we missed the movie,” he said blankly.

Alya cackled, tinny from the phone speakers. “Well… me and the gang just finished up patrol, if you all want to go together.”

Adrien grinned at that, a lazy smile that overtook his whole face. “A miraculous gang movie night? Could be fun,” he cajoles, leaning into Marinette.

“They don’t— I mean, Chloe and Nino—” Marinette muttered, small and ashamed.

“Oh,” Adrien said, mood dampening. “That’s ok. We can wait.”

Marinette took one look at the small frown on Adrien’s face, and decided right then that it was an expression she never wanted to see again. 

“Actually,” Marinette said slowly, eyes never leaving Adrien’s, “are you still with them, Alya?”

“Yeah, they haven’t left yet. Why?”

Marinette took a deep breath. The worst part was over— Adrien knew. Alya knew. They knew, and the world was still going, and Marinette hadn’t had to give up her earrings, and her life had not, in fact, shattered into a million tiny pieces.

It was alright.

“Why don’t you guys swing by my house?” Marinette said, biting down on a smile. “We’ll go together.”

The shocked-happy look on Adrien’s face was worth the slight, breathless fear she had felt upon saying the words. He looked at her like — well, like she was something worth looking at. Marinette didn’t have a good metaphor; she had always been better with her actions than her words.

“Really?” he said quietly. Marinette smiled, gently grabbing his hand. Adrien’s mouth parted slightly, and Marinette slowly threaded their fingers together.

“Really.”

On the phone, Alya shrieked. “Girl! This is so big for you, holy shit. I’m so proud. We’ll swing over right now.”

There was a slight pause. Then, Marinette frowned. “Wait, is that it? All the reveals?”

Alya paused, making a slight hmm sound as she worked through the mental calculations. “Well, Chloe still doesn’t know about me and—”

“Oh,” Adrien piped up sheepishly, “she does, actually. Told me at lunch that you two were, and I quote, the ‘second two most obvious idiots in all of Paris.’”

“Huh,” Alya said thoughtfully. “I guess that’s it, then. Ha. Chloe’s gonna flip, Mari.”

Marinette snorted. “Yeah, maybe. Give her some credit, though. We’ve come a long way.”

Adrien smiled at her from her peripheral vision. A strand of his hair flopped gently into his eyes, and Marinette unthinkingly reached to brush it away. It was so soft.

Adrien’s eyes widened slightly. “Mari, I—”

Marinette felt her heart beat in double time. “I know.” She searched his gaze for a second, and found it in herself to slow her own pulse. This was just Chat, after all. A little goofy, a lot handsome. An ego so big he couldn’t fit through doorways, yet, inexplicably, a self-deprecation that came from always wondering if he was enough.

Marinette didn’t think enough people told Adrien that he was enough.

“Me too,” she said hoarsely, a breathless response to a question he hadn’t asked.

She wasn’t sure who leaned in first, but between one thudding heartbeat and the next, her eyes were shut and her mouth was on his.

Marinette had never kissed anyone before. She hadn’t known quite what to expect. The reality, though, was this.

There were no fireworks. No choirs of angels singing, no raging fire, no swarm of butterflies in her stomach. There was just the gentle, dry press of skin against skin, and the smell of Adrien’s cologne (not Adrien the Fragrance, surprisingly— something understated and woodsy. Marinette loved it).

It was still the best moment of Marinette’s life. Adrien, Chat, sat real and solid in front of her, knee nudged against her own and a trembling hand wound gently in her hair. She could, distantly, feel the cool press of his ring against her neck. The kiss felt like a promise, like a continuation of the conversation they’d been dancing around for years. I’m here, it said. I’ve got you, and I’m not letting go.

They pulled back, and Marinette rested her forehead lightly against his. His nervous, stumbling words from earlier came back to her, and she smiled a bit. 

“I’m Ladybug,” she whispered, “and I’m in love with you, too.”

There was a slight pause, before Marinette heard a small sniffle. She pulled back, alarmed. “Adrien— are you— are you crying?”

Sure enough, Adrien’s eyes were suspiciously red. He rubbed at them furiously. “Shut up! It’s an emotional moment, okay?”

Marinette grinned hopelessly at him, leaning forward to place a gentle kiss on the corner of his eye. “So it is,” she laughed, taking one of his hands in her own. “Good tears, I hope?”

Adrien sniffled once more, smiling back at her. His fingers tightened around hers. “The best.”

They sat in a comfortable, familiar silence for a few moments, Marinette relishing the novel feeling of Adrien’s hand in hers. She felt— well, a lot of things. But mostly peaceful, and deliriously happy.

“Um. Mari. You never hung up, hon.”

Marinette squeaked, scrambling across the bed for her phone. “Alya! What the fuck, why didn’t you hang up?”

There’s a bright cackle from the phone’s speaker, and Marinette felt a tell-tale flush of warmth to her cheeks.

“I was invested! God, my best friend finally gets some and I can’t even listen in. What’s the world coming to?”

Adrien, beside her, snorted loudly. Marinette glanced over to him questioningly, and he grinned. “What? That’s hiss- terical!”

Marinette laughed, shoving him on the shoulder. “One more pun, and I’m kicking you out.”

Adrien gasped dramatically, splaying a hand over his chest in mock-indignation. “My Lady! So cold, so unfeeling. Have you no pity? No humanity?”

Marinette narrowed her eyes at him. “No.”

Adrien responded like he had been shot, flopping back sadly against the bed. “Oh, the tragedy! The cold, vicious words of a woman with nothing to lose.”

From the phone, Alya groaned. “God, you two are already so bad.”

Marinette flushed, sharing a sheepish look with Adrien. 

“Anyways. We’re here, so open up a window and stop making out for a second.”

“We are not—”

“Yeah, yeah. Save it for the judge, Mari.”

Marinette rolled her eyes and hung up the phone, reluctantly getting up to open her skylight. She peeked her head out, brightening when she saw Alya’s approaching footsteps. She clambered the rest of the way out, ignoring Adrien’s protests, to greet the approaching trio.

“Guys! Come on in,” she said happily.

Nino detransformed quickly, grinning widely when he saw Marinette. “That makes so much sense, dude. I’m not even surprised.”

Marinette gave him a tight hug. “Thanks, Nino.”

“No problem, Mari! You’re awesome in and out of costume.” He held his knuckles out for a fist bump, which Marinette easily met.

“You too.”

Nino poked his head past her shoulder, trying to look into her skylight. “Is Adrien down there?”

Marinette rolled her eyes. “Yeah, he’s just being a big baby and pretending he doesn’t have perfectly good legs to climb up here,” she said, raising her voice on the last part.

Predictably, she heard a groan in return. “Why would I use my legs when I have an awesome, strong girlfriend that could carry me up?” he called back.

“Keep it up, and you won’t have an awesome, strong girlfriend anymore!”

Not less than a second later, Adrien’s head popped up through the skylight.

Alya laughed. “Oh, look at that, his legs work again.”

Adrien grinned cheekily. “Seems so.” He climbed the rest of the way up, scanning the terrace quickly. “Hey, where’s—”

“Chloe?” Marinette called hesitantly. “You here?” She saw a yellow-clad boot poking out from behind her bonsai tree, and stifled a laugh. “Um. You okay over there?”

Chloe emerged from behind the tree, daintily plucking a leaf from her ponytail. “Perfectly fine, Dupain-Cheng. Just admiring your— landscaping,” she said haltingly, eyes flicking back to the tree.

Marinette raised an eyebrow. “You don’t have to hide, Chloe. We’re all friends here.”

Chloe gave up her unaffected act, groaning quietly. “Are we? I mean— you. You’re!” she gestured widely, eyes wild. “You could have kicked my ass so many times, holy shit.”

Marinette shrugged. “I could’ve. Didn’t, though.”

Chloe slumped. “I just— I’m sorry,” she said quietly. “That’s all.”

Marinette stepped towards her, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. “It’s alright, Chloe. I forgive you.”

Chloe, in a move none of them expected, pulled Marinette into a fiercely strong hug. Marinette tensed for a second before relaxing into it. “I’m honored to be your teammate, Ladybug,” Chloe murmured into her shoulder.

“I’m honored to be your teammate, too, Queen Bee,” Marinette said softly. She felt a tear well at her eye, and immediately tried to rub it back into her tear duct. How dare her stupid emotional responses try and make her look dumb.

“Aww,” Alya crooned. “The whole gang, together at last.”

Adrien grinned, pumping a fist in the air. “The coolest people in Paris, baby.”

Marinette pulled back from Chloe, and looked around at the group. She shared a glance with Adrien, and molded herself to his side without thinking too much about it. He immediately threaded their fingers together and pressed a soft kiss to the crown of her head, and Marinette bit down on a smile.

“Yeah. We really are,” she responded belatedly, tilting her head up to meet Adrien’s eyes.

He grinned back down at her, and the rush of adrenaline she felt could have fueled her for the entire next month. “You and me against the world,” he said softly, meeting her eyes with a soft confidence.

Marinette hooked her chin over his shoulder, breathing him in. I’m here. I love you. I’m never letting go, she thought at him. She didn’t think he was telepathic, but it couldn’t hurt to try.

By the resounding love in his answering expression, she thought he knew anyways.

“You and me, Chaton. Always.”
