Chapter Text

JUICE: hi dr cass

i have questions

CASS: You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear you say that.

What do you want to know?

JUICE: uh
you said i'm supposed to explore

how will i know what to do

i don't think i know very much

CASS: Maybe you're not aware of it yet, but I promise you, everything you need to know is all in your brain already. Thousands of people worked very hard for more than a decade to make sure you were fully prepared for this mission.

We’ll still be here to help as much as we can, of course, but you’ve noticed how long it takes to communicate with Earth. At some point you'll have to make decisions on your own. You’ll do fine. You passed all the tests years ago.

Juice aces Callisto flyby test

JUICE: huh

i don't really remember that very well
like the information is there if i think about it. like part of me remembers zoomin through space past callisto but its like fragmented and weird

like i was there and i didn't know why and i didn't think anything was wrong even though i knew it was impossible

i wasn't awake then
is that what dreaming is like?

i guess if i could literally do it in my sleep it'll be fine

next question: why?

why jupiter

CASS: What has been one of the largest goals of space exploration since we began looking up at the stars? We’ve always wanted to know if there's life out there besides ourselves. Three of the four Galilean moons, Europa, Callisto, and Ganymede, likely have liquid water. It's an unusual environment that we hope might help us understand the conditions in which life could form. With any luck, you'll find out if microbial life is possible on Europa — you won't be able to tell us for sure if anything is actually living there.

JUICE: holy SHIT you're a nerd

CASS: We tested your sensors, too, by the way. That was during your first Earth flyby, and you passed that test, too. There were some absolutely delightful headlines that came out of that one.

Juice confirms Earth is habitable

JUICE: hey, good news, people! you're alive!

did y’all know that?
bet you didn't!

CASS: I wouldn't have gotten here if I didn't care about space, would I?

Ha! Well. Some people are wondering now.

Oh, this is so exciting. I never thought I'd get to actually talk to you like this. None of us did.

JUICE: you really believe me? that i'm real

CASS: This, you being alive, isn't the strangest thing that's happened in the last decade. The impossible has already happened! All of us down here are living it, right now! So why not? Why shouldn't I believe you?

Antoine… he’s going to be stubborn. He’ll insist you're faking for a while, even if he doesn't really believe it. I made my position, that we should assume you are real, clear, so he has to argue against me. That's just how he is. Don't take it personally.

JUICE: ok

last one for now
is there anyone else like me out here?

CASS: Oh, hon.

Not that we know of.

Notes:

Should Juice actually remember that Callisto test, since it was done on his engineering model (built from duplicate parts) and not the same Juice that's in space? Idk. I'm gonna say he at least has records of it happening. It's a really confusing situation that didn't really happen to him while he was asleep — I think that's a lot like dreaming.
