Summary
Moon's sister, Fern, survives the Tath attack. This changes nothing, and everything, about the course of their lives.
Fern and Moon had been thrown out of a lot of groundling settlements and camps over the turns, but no matter how many times it happened it was always a painful surprise. Not because it happened, but because each time was so unpredictable. Fern kept a wary eye for the day it was going to happen with the Cordans.

Summary
Fern knew that they would either never find their people, or they would find them by unexpected happenstance, and it wasn't worth agonizing over which of the two it would be. Then, the unexpected happenstance finally happened.

Summary
Fern was stretched out, her head pillowed on Moon’s stomach as he gazed at the stars. This was her favorite time of the day, when they rested and Stone shared stories of his wide travels. “Did you ever look for other shifters?” Stone asked. She was grateful that Moon’s body was between her and Stone’s as she tensed up.
Moon’s breathing stilled for a moment, then resumed. “For awhile. Then we stopped.” He made a shrugging motion with his shoulders. “We couldn’t search the whole Three Worlds.”

Summary
It wasn’t much later, when they were flying over a temperate jungle, that she realized they were almost to their destination. She felt a little dizzy. A slow-moving river cut through the jungle, and perched atop the water was a huge structure, a gray step-stone pyramid surrounded with pillars and stone platforms cultivated into a complex terraced garden structure. Figures were walking on the terraces and platforms.
There were Raksura here, and they were alive.

Summary
An anxious weight settled low in her belly, and she tried to meet Stone’s eyes. His good eye passed over her and fixed on Moon, who was jittering slightly in place. Fern could feel Moon’s yearning to grab her and climb out the nearest air shaft.
Before Fern could say anything, Stone was already walking away, and Moon followed the older consort looking all the while like he was walking out to a vargit feeding ground.

Summary
“It’s no different from any number of social political maneuvers we’ve seen over the turns in groundling settlements,” Fern said. Everything came together for her, finally. "Except this time we're in the middle of it--."
"And we can't just fly away," Moon said.
