Description:

In the Dictates of Poetics, the Vulcan philosopher T'Hain states that "a character's actions must flow inexorably from their established traits."

The repetitive epic has been the preeminent genre of Cardassian literature since the beginning of the First Republic. The Neverending Sacrifice may be a prototypical example of the form, in which seven generations of a family are faced with the exact same set of choices, and make the same decisions.

Although considered more popular entertainment than respectable Cardassian literature, the "enigma tale" is a related genre. The investigation is over, and the suspect is guilty. The mystery is: why?

Ghett Iloja, a Cardassian serialist poet exiled at the height of the First Republic, founded an artists' colony in the Vulcan province of Prim. Among his patrons was the prominent S'chn T'gai family, foremost among them the first translator of Surak's teachings into Standard, Skon.

Dax recalls that the exiled poet "had quite the temper."
