“Speak of the devil,” Julian says as a way of greeting.
On the other end of the phone, Noel laughs. “What’s that meant to mean?”
“I was just thinking about you.”

Summary
Some called him nosy (Khun) and others called him a meddler (Kinn), but Kim liked to think of himself as simply... Patient.
And determined.
Kim wants a lot of things in this life and he's managed to get most of them by biding his time until the moment was right.
Each and every moment that Kim get's to live with Porchay is right. Which is precisely why he's not in the least bit annoyed that he is once again found waiting while Chay turns their shared apartment upside down in search of a lost item.

Summary
“Kinn. I am breathing.” Porsche’s shoulders shift under the weight of Kinn’s arm but he doesn’t shrug him off. He’s staring dead ahead between the seats of the car, watching stretches of road disappear beneath the wheels of their car. Kinn opens his mouth again but Porsche cuts him off. “If you tell me to calm down one more time, Kinn, I swear I will shoot you.”
In the front of the car, Big and Tops exchange concerned glances, but Kinn only muffles his amused laughter in the top of Porsche’s head, pressing kisses there when he’s finished laughing. “Okay, then what do you need instead?”
Beneath his hands, Porsche loses just a bit of his tension. “Tell me he’s going to be okay.”

Summary
Vince turns thirty today. It's a difficult age for the little man, who places such importance on his youth and his looks. Howard hasn't even bothered to try and comfort him about it, because it would be a pointless endeavour. Instead, Howard has been planning.
"Can I know where we're going yet?" Vince whines from the passenger seat.
"We're nearly there," Howard replies calmly. "You can wait another few minutes."

Summary
After fourteen days, Arthur has stopped counting.
When each rise of the sun brings no change, he remains awake into the early hours trying to find a way to attempt to force said change, and inevitably, the sun rises once again without a solution having presented itself. Arthur is losing not only optimism but stamina too, and so is everyone in the encampment.
For an unidentifiable amount of time they have lived in the mud-soaked trenches of war, and Arthur misses his own bed. He misses the familiarity of his home. The sounds of Camelot's people going about their business surrounded him wherever he went, at home, but here there are only the sounds of war and exhaustion. He misses seeing his brothers-in-arms smile.
He misses seeing the light in Merlin's eyes.

Summary
Kim blinks and his gaze refocuses. Instead of looking through Chay, he's finally looking at him. It's not any better, to be honest. "Really, it's nothing."
It's so obviously not nothing that Chay is torn between comfort and fury. He wants to go to Kim's side and hold him until he feels safe again. He wants to smack him upside the head and call him a moron. Maybe he can do both. Should do both.

Summary
Seventeen days.
There is no genuine reason to be keeping track. It doesn't help anyone.
Macau becomes more withdrawn each day regardless of the number hovering over his head. Porsche doesn't need to know, like clockwork he appears every three to remind everyone he's being supportive, that he's there for them, whatever they need.
If anything, Pete feels each count like a blow. Painful, like he's scratching the tally into a concrete wall with his fingernails.
Vegas certainly doesn't need to know the exact number of days, because he's not fucking conscious. For any of them.
It causes nothing but pain to count, but Pete does it anyway.

Summary
This week Porsche has been away for four nights in a row, and he hasn't been dropping by during the days either. Kinn knows there's a problem keeping him away, but he hasn't been enlightened as to the details yet. See: he's trying to let Porsche lead without too much hand-holding, and that means not interfering unless Porsche actively asks him to.
They are intending to break their separation streak tonight. Kinn has cleared his evening and he knows Porsche is on his way to him right now. There's food, fresh and steaming, waiting at the table. An uncorked bottle of wine and two glasses ready to be drained.
And Kinn never presumes how his nights with Porsche will go but he made sure he had fresh sheets put on his bed this morning.
Everything is ready, he just needs Porsche.

Summary
"Do it then." He challenges, meeting Vegas' gaze head-on. "Tell me not to go. I can see you want to."
"I don't--" The protests die in a frustrated grunt, Vegas turns his face away, glaring at the sheets caught in his fisted hands. Pete waits patiently for an explanation to follow. "I'm telling you to go. You need this."
And if that isn't the most confusing cluster of words Vegas has ever muttered. "What do you mean?" Stubborn, and likely uncomfortable to boot, Vegas remains silent. "Vegas, what do you mean?"
As if the information is being pulled from him like teeth, Vegas grits out, “You need time away from this... From me.”

Summary
Historically, there have been very few situations in which Kim has truly been able to relax. Less than a handful, really.
And it’s not as if he enjoys being this way either; full of distrust and spitting anger at the world. It’s simply the default setting he has become used to. Trained since birth to be fearful of his life. To be on edge. To find relaxing inherently unrelaxing.

Summary
Sure enough, the stack of dishes that had been there when Chay left this morning is gone. Cleaned up and put away.
Chay processes this. Chews it over in his head for perhaps far too long. He must look out of his mind, glaring at his empty sink like this. But he's trying to order his thoughts before they all come spilling out in the wrong order.
What the fuck even is the right order to deal with this in?
Kim’s smug little face decides it for him, when Chay turns his attention back to him. That can’t stand.
“Did you break into my room?”

Summary
The cycle will repeat, and Chay will eventually find himself here again, peeling bloodstained clothes off the love of his life and thanking any deity that will listen that he is home alive and relatively unharmed.
There will be more sleepless nights. But it’s fine. Because Chay would never sleep again if it means Kim has someone to come home to at the end of his darkest nights.

Summary
Vegas had taken an oath to treat Pete like he deserved.
No longer a pet, but a person Vegas adored.
It’s only when he begins trying to do that it becomes obvious that Vegas has no idea how to adore a person. It’s not like he’s had many examples to learn from. It’s not like he has many memories of his mother, and even less of her in the same room as his father. It’s not like he’s felt it before, not the way he’s trying to give it to Pete. Wholeheartedly. Kindly. With grace and respect and care.
Gently. Vegas wants to be able to love gently, but he’s not sure he’s capable of it.

Summary
In the time they’ve been together, Chay has demonstrated consistently that he’s more likely to treat certain boundaries like climbing frames than he is to respect them. And Kim can’t even be mad about it, because the boundaries Chay chooses to disrespect are the ones that, in hindsight, are harming Kim more than helping him, it’s simply that Kim has existed in his own contained universe long enough he didn’t know the difference.
These days, Chay is there to flirt with the lines in the sand Kim drew as a child who was in pain, and adapt the walls to better fit the slightly less in pain man he is now.
And despite Kim not understanding why, Chay adores Kim the same way he adores Wik and even Kimhant. Kim is safe with Chay no matter what face he’s wearing.
OR: Sometimes Kim struggles moving between his predetermined 'identities', especially switching off Wik after a live concert, and Chay helps him realise that it's okay to be 'just Kim'.

Summary
Kim wouldn't describe himself as an insomniac. He can sleep, he just doesn't. And when he does, it’s a fitful and often empty experience. He’s awoken easily, and there’s rarely anything keeping him held in the darkness.
Kim doesn't dream. Not often. Not the way others do in fantastical colours and strange occurrences. Whatever is trapped inside of Kim’s head is far less kind. Far less gentle.

Summary
Chay knows they need to have a conversation about it, about Kim chipping pieces of himself away and using them to build a shelter around Chay, that relationships aren’t supposed to function like that. Kim isn’t a sacrifice to be laid at Chay’s feet in the hopes of getting affection in return. Chay loves Kim as he is, he doesn’t need to be bought, but it’s obvious Kim has forgotten how to experience the unconditional part of love.

Summary
It all happens so fast.
One moment, Vegas is licking a stripe from Pete’s collarbone to his ear. Asking, “Are you going to be a good boy for me, Pete?”
The next, he is on the floor, pain radiating up his spine as his tailbone cracks against the wood floor. His barely healed wounds pull uncomfortably as he goes sprawling. Vegas’s head bounces back and he barely has time to work out what the fuck just happened when he hears a pained grunt and the pop of a gunshot that makes him flinch.
