Summary
Her eyes narrowed and her whole body shifted into that stiff posture he hated. She was caught and she hated it. He didn’t even care what it was. What was keeping him rooted in mounting anger was that she didn’t trust him.
“I think we should break up.” It almost felt like the words weren’t coming from her. She looked visibly uncomfortable and had started to angle herself toward the window. “I’ve been thinking about it for a while,” she continued, curling her hand into a fist in her pocket to protect whatever she was hiding from him.

Summary
“What are you doing here?”
They hadn’t been this close since that day back in March when he’d told her he loved her. He had to take a step back, overwhelmed by the urge to kiss her.
“I’m staying on campus for the summer, working on a mural for the school and the series I’m submitting for college admissions.”
She looked down at their feet, pointed at each other. “I see.”
“I’m not going to ask what you’re doing here,” he said, unable to keep the bitterness from his voice. “I’ll stay out of your way.” He stepped past her to unlock his door.
Wednesday stared at him. “That’s your room?”
“What’s it matter?”
She bit her lip and glanced hastily across the hall. “Never mind,” she said.

Summary
They’d had little support from anyone except Enid for a long time. Her reflexive morning ‘I love you’s made it worth it.
Wednesday’s hand tightened on his bicep.
“Xavier.”
She shifted, craning her neck up to kiss his neck, his jaw, the corner of his mouth. She tasted sour from sleep, but gradually it faded to the familiar bitterness tinged with something that reminded him of floral poisons. He kissed back, trembling with restraint.
They never kissed like this in bed.
