But there was something distinctly different about the way Kacchan called him Deku.
He knew it was a play on his name, and Kacchan's friends laughed- so it was meant to be a joke, maybe? He had laughed too, if only to pretend he understood. But then Kacchan called him that again, and again, and again. After a while, it began to feel less like an inside joke and more like he was the joke- and even still he could not find what was so funny. He was small, scrawny, gullible, naive, and defenceless. That was Izuku Midoriya, and it wasn't very funny to him. He found it rather sad.
He stopped laughing then. In his head, though, he could still hear their chants. "Defenceless Izuku! Are you gonna cry?"
That changed the day he got his quirk.

This is set in the same AU as my 'To Heal A Phantom Wound' fic. Reading it isn't explicitly needed, but it adds a lot of substance to Izuku's character and also his relationships with the others. Though it is rather outdated, so the writing is a little clunky.
