But he decided to stay in the mortal realm, and wrote a book called PIDW based off how the cultivation world was in the past, when people could still ascend. Accidentally making it a completely different universe. Which ghosts, calamities, and heavenly beings could go to, but mortals could not. Xiang Fei ended up losing most of his memories and ended up in the universe of PIDW as Shang Qinghua. He got his memories back after the story ended.
Shen Yuan was a mortal. He hated PIDW so much that after the webnovel ended, he choked from rage and ended up in the body of When Qingqiu, the scum villain. After changing the novel, befriending Shang Qinghua, and marrying Luo Binghe, he ascended. Shang Qinghua was there to greet him shortly after, and introduced him to everyone. Then Shen Yuan went back to the mortal realm after a few years to be with his husband

Xie Lian didn’t intend to get cursed, or sick as a result. As a matter of fact, he didn’t intend to even get involved with the ghosts who were sluggishly parading themselves around Puqi Village. He just—well—what else was he supposed to do? He collected scraps, stayed in his shrine, had an exhilarating time with Hua Cheng whenever he visited, and more or less avoided going to the heavens unless absolutely necessary. What harm could helping a few ghosts do? They were sick, and sad, and dead, and unable to leave, and he was not any of those things—except the last one—so it only felt right if he tried to help, didn’t it?
Of course, getting sick was something he should have expected. After all, his bad luck did not make him immune to suffering. Only immune from dying from it. Hua Cheng would rather he didn’t get sick, and didn’t die at all! Both the real version, and the dream version said so!
(or: xie lian takes the burdens from a very sick, very dream-riddled ghost. he, by extension, becomes a very sick, very dream-riddled god. hua cheng takes care of him.)
