Gimli lightly laid a hand on Legolas’s bare shoulder. “Legolas, wake,” Gimli softly and calmly said. Then he pulled his hand back.
Legolas chose to wake Gimli the way that Legolas himself knew worked – he tapped Gimli’s shoulder and whispered close to his ear, “Gimli, wake!”

The inseparable – indeed cohabitating – dwarf and elf take care of one another through thick and thin. Which, in this case, means insomnia and nightmares. Very small references to anything unpleasant, here. This is comfort, softness, and the warmth of love, however you choose to name it.

When Gimli is but a child, he gets lost in the mines of Ered Luin. It is dark, and it is cold, and he is alone.
He will never recover.
With his shaking hands and his Stonefear Gimli cannot perform as well as he wished, as a Dwarf. He can't go on a Quest to reclaim Erebor. He can't go on a Quest to reclaim Khazad-dûm.
He can, however, force his way into the Quest to save all of Middle-Earth.
There he meets Legolas, who reminds him too much of his friend Ori, in many ways.

Summary
Legolas can fight if provoked, negotiate if absolutely necessary, and open up to close friends. But ask him to interact on a friendly but distant level, and he turns into a nervous wreck. When Elrond asks him to join the Fellowship of the Ring, he is far less anxious about the enemies they will have to face than about the eight companions with whom he will be traveling.
Gimli is fully ready to reach out a hand in friendship to the elf in their group – until he perceives that Legolas is not ready to return the favor. He spends the early days of their Quest seething with resentment.
Their stay in Lothlorien opens the door to new understanding between them, leading to a friendship – or more – that will be sung of for ages.
