Eight degrees.
That’s how cold the weatherman said tonight—Christmas Eve—would be. A freak winter storm had blown in several days ago, dumping several feet of ice and snow on the small Ohio town. Cars were buried under the drift, and houses were freshly sparkling under the white powder, like icing on gingerbread. The dark, dirty pavement was washed away, hidden from the world by a rug of snow.
Yelena could not appreciate nor feel any of this.
She could not see the beauty around her as she trudged through the un-shoveled sidewalk, away from her warm house, away from her parents.
A usually festive and happy time in the Belova household is darkened by tragedy.
After a fight with her parents, Yelena storms out of the house, running into the cold night, completely unprepared for the events that plague her on a dark and snowy night. -
