In the midst of the "Mourning March" in 1991, for Freddie Mercury's funeral, some newspapers bought the confession of "Jo M.", a woman who, since Brian May's illness during "Sheer Heart Attack" (1974), worked and lived with Queen in secret, "turning into Brian" by replacing him on some contributions to the album and using his lyrical self to express her most abysmal nausea of life.

He was afraid to take the musicians hand for fear of breaking it. Sure, he had always looked fragile and delicate, like the wind could knock him over, but never so fucking breakable.
As if it would only take a glance to shatter him to pieces all over the room.
Somehow seeing him like this, a thin hospital blanket over his lanky frame, clean of his stage make-up, unmoving, made his fears worse.
It made the danger he was in real. -

He decides against it, because he doesn’t want to get too attached.
Because it is a horrible thing, truly horrible. It squirms and burrows and nibbles. It chomps and bites and grinds. It demands space to luxuriate in his stomach and sends whatever goes down swiftly back up again. It disapproves of uncleanness and fires disinfectant through his body, which melts his fat and muscle and brain cells away.
It’s that last thing that’s the worst, because it melts enough to render him useless, but not enough for him to be unaware of the fact.
He needs to do better.

Freddie sends a single red rose in congratulations.
It is carried into his room on a plastic tray, by two gloved hands on the end of disposable scrubs. Brian cannot tell if the eyes above the thick, white mask are kind.
He hopes they aren’t, because at least then he isn’t losing anything to the isolation.

Brian was lucid as the plane took off, lucid enough to suck on a sweet so that his ears didn’t pop and to have watched the buildings reduce to atoms before his straining eyes.
Lucid enough to watch as John (across the aisle) spoke in a low voice to one of the flight attendants. She turned around and caught his eye briefly, then turned away with something teetering between concern and embarrassment in her eyes. Then she nodded.
Lucid enough to mumble “Well this is in no way mortifying,” into a full sick-bag and lucid enough to hear Roger ask for, “More of those please… loads more.”
The fever hit at 35,000 feet.
It broke every bone in his body, meticulously and methodically. The scientist in Brian was almost impressed.

Part 6 in the Clogs for Paws series!
The year is 1974 and the band goes on their first tour of America, but not too soon after their departure things start to go awry. First it was simple inconveniences like their new band lawyer being a vampire and luggage being delayed, but then Freddie is attacked by a shadowy figure and Brian is stricken by a mysterious illness.
Will the band and their new friends be able to save Freddie and Brian before it is too late? More importantly, will they find out who attacked Freddie and why Brian became sick?
