Summary
In 1917, Spirit, the grandson of the original Spirit and Rain, is captured by the US Army. After failing to brake him, Spirit is shipped off to the trenches of the Great War in Europe to do labor work for the army. As the Allied forces make plans on an offensive to break the lines of the German forces, Spirit, named Thunder by the American soldiers, grows a bond with one particular soldier and a romantic bond with a British chestnut mare named Athena. As battle draws closer, Spirit will realize that there is more than just his freedom that is at stake if the Allies fail to push back the enemy.
