It was a completely reasonable question, but Ben already knew where this was going. “If they do take DS9 then we’re just going to have to hope that the mines we managed to lay will be good enough to keep anyone from going through the wormhole. We’re not going to salt the earth behind us, Doctor. The wormhole will remain intact, even if it makes things more difficult for us.” Kira shot Bashir a glare as Ben said that.
Bashir just lowered his head slightly in cautious agreement. Ben didn’t really blame him for his mental calculus; even without his orders from Section 31, he would probably still be weighing the potential lives lost if they couldn’t cut off Dominion reinforcements for good. If the Dominion did take DS9, then maybe it did become only a matter of time until their ships kept coming through from the Gamma Quadrant. Maybe it would be better to destroy the wormhole while they had the chance and ensure that the Dominion couldn’t do that.
Except this was not an option, as far as Ben was concerned. Not for him, not for anyone.
