He was more surprised when that precaution paid off, but its a good thing Nayru owed him one.

Despite the young Hero of Legend’s best efforts, the spirit of the Master Sword faded after Ganon was defeated (the first time). Some years and five other adventures later, Link discovers a book that will allow him to help and guide the heroes that come after him like Fi did for him during his first adventure.

Link was eight when he met the spirit of the Master Sword.
Fi still remembered the last time too-small hands held her... She swore she would not let this one fail and die too. She would teach him to be an unstoppable force.
Only... maybe a traumatized sword who was taught that emotions were useless and that all dangers were to be eliminated wasn't the best option to raise a child told from a young age he would be tasked with protecting the goddesses bloodline.

Summary
Legend swore to himself a long time ago that he wouldn’t dwell on ‘what-ifs’. He knew that would only serve to distract him when he needed to make tough, in the moment, decisions and he couldn’t allow that.
But he wasn’t escaping those what-ifs anytime soon. He should have known her promise was only good so long as he wasn’t dying.

Fi was left to rot for years after her hero fell. When another child hero came to lift her, she was a cracked and damaged blade, weak and useless. Despite never resting under Hylia's light, she was restored to full power under his hands, and now, when her beloved Master lies ill by ways of the essence of the demon god he killed, she hopes that same light can heal him too.

Link almost gets pulled through a portal but for one reason or another it closes before he goes through it. Deciding to accept the chance to prepare, he alerts Zelda and Ravio about the possibility of a new adventure… then he gets roped into hunting down these new monsters springing up across Hyrule.
AKA: Dark Link impersonates Legend except it’s all from Legend’s POV so he is very confused when a group of blond weirdos try to kill him

Legend never considered himself the best of their group, nobody in the group did. It was unsaid, but most of them agreed that either Sky or Hyrule was the strongest between their swordsmanship and magical prowess respectively. However, the Oracle Nayru once said otherwise.
In a dungeon, the Chain arrives at the final boss room, where a dehydrated corpse that later claims to be a Sheikah Monk demands to fight the greatest of the heroes, alone.
Hyrule is just far too much of a fanboy for Legend to escape this fight he thinks he will lose.
