Joanne and her father join this group until they reach Boston. Here Jo starts to develop feelings for a man in the group named Joel. Though he's older, she's old for her age. She proves time and time again she doesn't need help from anyone, that she's not afraid to be alone, that no one will pull the wool over her eyes.

In 2003, the world turned to shit the night of Joel’s 36th birthday. It was also the night that Maicee lost her mom and Joel lost Sarah. Fifteen years later, in 2018, Tommy, Maicee, and Joel were all living together in the Boston Quarantine Zone with a woman named Tess they met a few years into the post-apocalyptic world. They were all smugglers. Then Tommy left. He didn’t like the smuggling life. Tommy left to join the Fireflies. He didn’t think Joel or Maicee needed him anymore, but he was wrong. He left before Maicee could tell him she was pregnant. Maicee loved both men, but Tommy left anyways. Tommy thought Joel was better for her, but he was wrong. In 2023, smuggling an infected girl while pregnant, and with a five year old child, was not on Maicee’s agenda. She just wanted Joel and Tommy back with her again, but with her daughter this time.
