"Joe Miller? Ain't heard of him before. Gotta be some city slicker with no damn clue… One second, Viv." Your mom sighs and covers the phone with her hand as she turns to you with an impatient expression.
"What do you want? I'm on the phone."
"You're blocking the fridge. Just need some water." You mumble, motioning to the fridge with your hand. Another sigh escapes your mom like you're asking her to call upon the lord himself and beg for water. You just need her to step out of the way. And she does, rolling her eyes like that was the most irksome thing she's had to put up with all day. You're about to turn around and head back outside to finish up the mowing when you hear your mom snapping her fingers at you. It makes you feel like a dog. Especially when you turn and wait for her instruction.
"Go tell your dad someone named Joe Miller bought the old Harris farm," she whispers, her hand still over the bottom half of the telephone. You want to groan, to ask why the hell your dad would even care, but she's shooing you out with a flick of her hand. Maybe he knows whoever this Joe guy is and why it's so dire to spread the news that he's bought the farm. Maybe.

You brighten my day when skies are grey,'She butted her sweet little head into Ellie's side, feverish forehead smearing sweat across the faded tshirt.
"Fuck, you're warm."
Ellie chewed her lip with growing anxiety, pale hands pressed against the brown chubby cheeks radiating heat. She whined in response, batting her arms away with pathetic weakness.
"Hey, I know you don't like it..."
Ellie sighed, pulling her on her hip with great ease. She'd stripped the curlyknob down to one of Ellie's vests, but she just wouldn't cool down. Ellie ran her remaining fingers through the matted mess of black frizz, attempting to soothe her pained whimpers.
"You're alright, hey...hey..."
Ellie trembling hand raised a bottle of water to her lips, coaxing her to drink. They had no medicine, no antibiotics. Ellie could only pray that she would pull through this. She had to.

It's only a short while since Joel and Ellie arrived back in Jackson. Ellie is busy getting used to a new way of life, and a new parent-like version of Joel. Having to adjust to a whole new set of expectations is made even harder when Joel suddenly starts being even more overprotective than usual, and fails miserably in his efforts to lie to Ellie about why.
Ellie determines to find out exactly what is going on and in doing so learns a lot more about Jackson's own brand of justice, and what the man she's starting to feel comfortable thinking of as hers is willing to do to protect her.
Or, Joel won't let Ellie out of her sight in supposedly safe Jackson. He won't tell her what's going on. She has no choice but to sneak out and do some investigating of her own.
