Was this his punishment? The price paid for the sins of his ancestors, for the supposed crimes of his clan? He had been blessed by HER; what right had him to complain? Yet even so, the weight of that blessing pressed upon him. He could feel the echoes of every mortal pain—every wound, every broken scream, every anguished sob of his people. He had lived through it all. Past the violence, past the flames, past the endless years of suffering and loss.
And yet, for all the memories etched into his immortal soul, he could not remember the way his heart burned when his lover held him. He could not comprehend the touch of another that wasn’t the ghost that haunted his life. How could a demigod find safety in the touch of a mere human? Aventurine didn’t know. He would never know. He held a dead man closer to his heart than the world itself.
