Summary
Two years after Act III and a certain one-time Abbot of Kiersau, now a mere Bother Gernot of Saint Aubet's, has been sent back to Tassing to collect a few books that survived the fire. Naturally there is nothing smooth or easy about this journey and old faces and new faces bring about many emotional turmoils and conundrums.
Mostly, Gernot did not expect to ever see one Andreas Maler of Nuremburg ever again.

Summary
"Besides the marriage, news of his sister came in drips: whispers or rumours, snide remarks, or chastisements. A bailiffess now, some said. Though that didn't seem likely, at least not to Gernot. He couldn't see his sister managing things like tolls, not really."

Summary
The abbot has pulled the crucifix from beneath his tunic, letting the heavy silver chain slip over his chest. The cross swings slightly as Gernot presses one hand to it, his fingers hesitating before curling tightly around its ridges. His other hand rests flat against the table. Fingers splayed to steady himself.
"Are you praying?" The sound of Andreas' voice is too harsh for the silence of the room. "What─for my soul's salvation?"
And the abbot breathes in deep, a flicker of penitence crossing his features.
"Not yours."
