It’s warm and the days are slow and long and golden and Arthur has burnt down a crime empire.
He and the ghost of Mal share a flat in Paris where they’ve hidden away, sharing coffee and space and the tiny bee hotel Mal fell in love with.
Their upstairs neighbour is Eames, a sometimes-art-thief-always-con-man, whose current grift is as a professional ghost hunter.
The apartment is tiny, consisting of a single kitchen-bed-living room that is narrow enough that, if Arthur wants to, he can reach out and touch the front door and the balcony window at the same time. He generally doesn’t though, because Arthur is not one who believes in dwelling on his past riches. And the apartment is perfectly fine, especially when half the people who live in it are mostly incorporeal and have no need of sleep. Or food. Or the bathroom.

Her stomach objected with another rumble. She groaned but didn’t move.
Then something in the air shifted. Strange, faint. Aokbab chalked it up to that drifting state right before sleep. That was why she didn’t react when cardboard scraped softly against the floor. The sound continued for a few seconds, stopping only when the cushion next to her dipped, and a light touch brushed her leg, as though someone had set something down in front of her.
Jet lag and exhaustion were playing tricks on her. They had to be. Reluctantly, she opened her eyes. A small box sat open by her feet, filled with plates and mugs wrapped in paper. To her right, another box’s tape was slowly peeling open as if invisible hands were rummaging through it. Aokbab rubbed her eyes with her fists. This had to be a dream.
