Summary
The centuries-long warfare between the superpowers of Second-Age Middle-Earth, Sauron and Númenor, enters a new phase, which sweeps up Amandil, an untested young nobleman of Númenor. When his first battle goes badly wrong, Amandil must work together with other survivors, including a cousin who hates him and a famous mercenary captain who doesn't respect him, so they can lead their people safely back to friendly territory. On the long and dangerous journey, Amandil is forced to deal with the problems of food, politics, family, the emotional burdens of war and leadership, and how to escape a giant army chasing after them. This is the first chapter of a series of planned stories following the life and times of Amandil, father of Elendil, culminating in the apocalyptic end of the Second Age.
