Creatures inside of it called his name. Begging him to bleed as hands reached out to grab him. Dripping and screaming as they rotted. And there, in the middle of it all, was Max. And he. Was not. Going. To. Fucking. Die here alone.

David has always been good with kids. Between his job at the after-school daycare and his longtime attachment to Camp Campbell, it’s no surprise that he’s stretched thin, but he wouldn’t trade it for the world. Gwen reminds him constantly that he needs to slow down, but David can’t ignore kids who need help—especially when one of them turns out to be Max.
It won’t be easy, and it won’t be quick, but David refuses to give up. Because Max deserves more than what he’s had. He deserves a family.
And maybe, just maybe, David and Gwen can be that family.

I was tapping my foot nervously, my heart beating faster than it had any right to…Mr. Campbell just told me that if I don’t make sure that everyone shows off what they learned at camp, that he’ll be taken away! I can’t let that happen! Max has to show off what he has learned, but he was being so…oh…I don’t like using this word for our campers, but he was being so difficult! He just wanted to wait until someone else messed it up, but everyone was doing so well! Gwen was getting his papers, while I was trying to encourage Max to plan our routine. I’m sure that he would have fun if he just gave it a shot! All I want is for him to have just as much, if not more fun here than I did, is that really so much to ask? I had so much fun here when I was a kid, and I’m sure Max would too if he just gave it a chance! I again tried to encourage him.
