Summary
“You’ve carried your sins long enough,” the old man said, his voice whispering like reeds bent over still water. “But rest isn’t for you, Michael… not yet.”
Michael’s head snapped in a frantic shake, desperation making his voice come out ragged. “I’ve already done everything I could think of to make things right; what else is there for me to do?!”
The old man’s eyes glinted in the crimson light, ancient and unreadable. “Live,” he said simply. “Live, until you’ve learned what it means.”
Before Michael could even form another protest, a weathered hand pressed firmly against his back; in an instant, the surface of the lake split beneath him like torn silk, and the water—black as tar and thick as oil—rose up to swallow his scream.
He fell.
Or: Michael Afton gets a second chance at life… and does everything in his power to make sure it’s as miserable as possible. Yet for better or for worse, fate has other plans—and this time, it refuses to let him suffer alone. So, can Michael learn to accept the peace he’s been offered, or is he destined to keep drowning in the guilt that refuses to let him go?
