Summary
Daud knew something had gone wrong when the witch, Delilah, had grown dumbstruck when the portrait of Emily lost its unearthly shimmer.
He'd left her behind as she cried and wailed, and found himself here.Corvo couldn't stop seeing Havelock grasping onto her broken body. Not even when the waves washed her away.

Summary
“I’ll do anything.”
“Anything?”
Daud looks up at him – at his mask’s soulless lenses, more like, and Corvo knows it the instant he has him. Dead grey eyes sparkling with the tiniest bit of hope, clinging to life like an eel to a hook.
“You want something.” A statement, not a question. “Order away, bodyguard.”

Summary
Emily’s voice was less calm now. “They can send as many assassins as they like. They can never take you from me. No one can.”
He wanted to hug her tight, hold her close, the way he had when she was still a little girl. She’d always been so light in her arms, even when the both of them were splashed with blood. He’d known the words then, how to tell her not to worry, that she was safe now. That he would protect her.
Even then, it had been a lie. He’d never been able to keep her safe. The Outsider’s words, following him all his life: you cannot save her, you cannot save her, you cannot save her.

It was her left hand on his cheek; he could taste it in the air when she used the Outsider’s mark, a brief burst of seawater on his tongue.

Summary
Once again, there was a hollow through the depths of the world in the months that followed his second death, there was no Royal Protector, no Empress, barely an empire to stand for and no god to fear.
But there was a heroine and a stray and Emily supposed that had to be enough.

Summary
“Voiddamned bird,” Daud mutters at the crow, unable to muster the energy to feel truly annoyed. “What do you want? I don’t have any food.”
The crow cocks its head and lets out a quiet caw, and then –
And then the crow is gone.
In its place is a man.
Daud stares at the Empress’ disgraced Royal Protector for a solid ten seconds before he hums a soft, mirthless laugh, shaking his head. “I knew there was something off about you.”

“Were you being genuine? About wanting to repent?”
“Yes.”
When Attano speaks next, Daud can hear the hungry smile under the Serkonan lilt, even through the mask’s filter. “I could give you a chance for that.”

Summary
(learning how to live when your death was the mechanic by which you could succeed.)
Then the assassin says, "I don't know where to go from here."
At first Corvo thinks one of the Whalers must have snuck into the room, that maybe this is a coded message, that that's why it makes so little sense—but no. It's just him, and the assassin on his knees.
"I don't know how to change this," he adds. It sounds as drained as Corvo feels. "I've tried... everything I could think of. Nothing worked. This is how it always ends."-

Summary
The man at the front of the group raised his sword and pointed it at the black-clad figure on the throne. “Corvo Attano, you have committed terrible crimes against the Empire of the Isles and its peoples, and your reign of tyranny must come to an end. We--”
“Are you done?” Corvo asked flatly, maybe even sarcastically.
Dissidents always think they'll succeed when they try to stop Corvo the Black's reign. Always. -

Summary
When Daud stumbles upon the Royal Protector perched upon a rooftop, each comes to the conclusion that the other could be useful. For Daud in collecting information relevant for the looming contract calling for the assassination of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin; for Corvo in rooting out the seediest of threats to the Crown from the seediest of Dunwall's underbelly.
Neither expects, however, that the other will drastically shift them from their predetermined course, tying them together irreparably.
