Summary
Seong Gi-hun has given up hope.
With his best friend dead, Young-il killed, and the blood of several others on his hands, he knows that he and his mission are over. His next move is to try to keep as many of his newfound companions safe, no matter what happens to him.
If he has to sacrifice himself for the people around him, so be it.

Hwang In-ho watches as Gi-hun is forced back into the room with the other players.
He sees that the fight has left him.
In-ho knows, if he doesn’t step in, Gi-hun will be dead by the next game. This should be good news- he has incited a rebellion after all, him gone would be one less problem on In-ho’s plate.
So why does he feel heavy to think of Gi-hun dying?
There’s only one way for In-ho to keep tabs on Gi-hun and keep him alive for a later date: to re-enter the game.
“Young-il?”

Summary
‘Player 456.’ He says, and Gi-hun’s weary eyes snap back at the sound of his moniker.
‘Would you like to play a game with me?’
And suddenly he’s back in that skyscraper, looking out cold windows and hearing the beeping of hospital equipment, refusing to look towards Oh Il-nam as he asks the same damning question.
He had no choice then. He has no choice now. Only the mere illusion of it, as it had been with every set of options presented towards him in regards to the games.
‘Fine.’ Gi-hun resigns. ‘What game?’
Something seems to light up within the other at Gi-hun’s response, and had he been able to see his face, he’s sure the Front Man would’ve been smiling.
‘Chess would be nice.’

following jung-bae's death, gi-hun is knocked out cold, taken to the front man's quarters. and after awakening, he finds himself presented with a different option than usual; he's not to be a player in the game, but instead, the one playing it.
