Jason remembered the day when the pretending finally cracked. When the fake reality he made shattered as he stared at the prone, unconscious body on the bed, syringe laying abandoned beside her.
He remembered screaming.
He remembered shaking her, trying to get a response.
He remembered picking up the landline phone, fingers trembling, as he dialed in three numbers.
He remembered begging for help, his voice barely a whisper.
He remembered the panicked footsteps that barged into the apartment, the loud voices, the equipment. He remembered the feeling of helplessness. The utter terror of watching through the small slit of the cracked-open door as paramedics got her back. He remembered waiting with batted breaths, pleading to whoever was out there to spare her.
Please, he had thought, helplessly. I can't lose Mama. Please, I can't lose her too. Please, she's all I have. Please. Please. Please.
