Summary
Keith Kogane is beginning his third-year residency in emergency medicine at Garrison Med. He loves the fast-pace, adrenaline-pumping atmosphere and helping people pull through impossible situations. After his residency, he plans on starting his fellowship in trauma surgery. Keith's prowess at his job makes him the perfect choice for chief resident.
Minutes after his promotion, a woman with cystic fibrosis is rushed into the ER. Kara Richardson is a small bright spot for everyone. She's kind, cheerful, funny, and enjoys making others smile. Keith can't help forming a soft spot for her after only a few short hours in the emergency room. On a hunch he orders extra tests and discovers her diagnosis is much more severe - and complicated - than anyone realized.
Time never mattered so much to Keith until Kara is placed on the transplant list. As the days turn into weeks, all he can think about is Kara's infectious smile - and how devastated he's going to be if he loses her. While Kara's condition slowly worsens, Keith realizes he has to make a choice: detach himself from the one person who means something to him, or keep falling and risk his entire career.
