Summary
When Jess is struggling heavily in his first year of his postgraduate degree, Rory's offer to come along on her summer trip seems like a good enough chance to get away from everything for a few weeks. On their way to the lake house in the woods they pick up three of Rory's old friends: Paris, Rory's rival-turned-friend from High School; Dean, Rory's high school ex-boyfriend, and Marty, Dean's football friend all join the ride.
Dean, tall, handsome, boyish, broad-shouldered and eternally optimistic catches Jess's eye quickly. Equally, the quiet stranger, raises Dean's curiosity. When they arrive at the house, and Lane, Rory's childhood best friend, surprises everyone with her boyfriend, the logistics of rooms and beds are put into question. To ease the tension in the group, Jess agrees to share with Dean. In the heat of the summer, far away from their daily lives, the two guys are drawn into each other's orbit.

Meanwhile—why does everyone assume Rory likes Jess? It’s Paris she’s been distracted from her relationship by, but it wouldn’t matter regardless, because they’re clearly secretly dating. Why else would Paris be working at Luke’s?
