It's been a year after the death of her father, and the coronation not long after. Elodie has been working hard in order to live up to the expectations placed on her. She's starting to get used to the life that has been laid out for her, devoting herself entirely to meet others' expectations.
However, when a traveler with a strange device comes through town, they pique her interest, and Elodie offers them shelter in the castle. During the course of the traveler's stay, Elodie asks questions, trying to understand this "Kino"'s life and why they do the things they do. And perhaps, along the way, she'll get a new understanding of the predetermined path she calls her life.
