"I want you, Mon," he said, his voice dropping to a possessive whisper. "And what I want, I eventually have. The only question left is whether you will come to me willingly, or if I will have to burn down everything you pretend to care about until I am the only thing you have left."
It wasn't a threat. It was a statement of fact. A promise.
Mon opened her eyes, and the fear was still there, but now it was mingled with a reckless, defiant heat. "And if I said I might be willing?" she breathed, the words tasting like treason on her tongue.

She stepped closer, already composing the report she’d send to Luthen. The Astrolabe was real, and she would bet her last ration pack it was here. She’d prove her worth, put the last mission’s errors behind her.
A faint sound, from behind.
Kleya froze. That wasn't a rock settling.
She thumbed the memory globe, just in case, but did not turn around. Not yet.
“Hands up where we can see them,” called a voice. Male, Outer Rim accent of some voice. “Nice and slow.” The voice echoed in the chamber, making it hard for her to tell how far away he was. She mentally tallied her weapons: a vibro-shiv strapped to her thigh, a blaster at her hip, her tiny holdout hidden in a shoulder holster under her jacket, and her last-resort knife in her boot. All of them utterly useless with a range sight on her back.

Kleya’s gaze lifted to the half-dissected sculpture with its hidden compartment. “Trouble, Director?” she replied mildly. “I was going to send your clerk a report later tonight. The late Senator Krellan had some unusual tastes in artwork.”
Something—surprise? validation?—shifted across Warrick's usually impassive features. “Interesting, but you’ll have to follow it up later. There was a major security breach at the Obroa-skai archives, and one of our analysts has tracked down an encryption key used specifically by Ysanne Isard. We need you on this. Now.” The line cut.
Kleya stared at the empty holo-projector for a long moment, the Director’s words echoing in the sudden silence of the lab.
