Song Lan was gently rubbing circles into the space between his shoulder blades. “Xichen?” He signed, not liking the wet sounds of his raspy breathing.
“I’m fine, Lan’er…” Xichen’s voice was gravely and low. It did nothing to ease the fierce corpse at his side. The man grabbed his cup and then sipped from it, the soothing herbal warmth doing little to take the fire from his throat. He was feeling achy and feverish but the man refused to allow himself a break. Sick or not, he was still Sect Leader Lan. He had work to do.OR

Xichen was disoriented and confused but he could not go back to sleep. He slipped on an inner robe, shivering as the cold winter air raised goosebumps over his arms. He left the bedchamber, padding into the main living area of the Hanshi. Sitting near the window, moonlight cascading over his form, Song Lan was hunched, shoulders shaking with the force of his sobs. Fierce corpses couldn't actually release tears, but they could still cry. And currently, Song Lan was weeping.

He was surprised. There were no animals inside Cloud Recesses, save for Lan Wangji’s rabbits. Unless Wei Wuxian had snuck in a cat…? Or Jiang Wanyin had brought a pet that he had not informed anyone about?
It was entirely plausible. Lan Xichen got up to investigate.
