I'm so god damn tired so obviously the natural thing to do here is SMB2 shenanigans but also not really
There was a difference between Subcon and normal dreams.
Subcon was an actual world accessed by dreaming. Dreams were just... well, dreams.
And Mario's dreams never featured weird vegetables and tossing enemies around all the time, so when those elements suddenly returned, he figured he was back in Subcon.
He was not.
And the vegetables were not the only things about to get weird.
