Maybe Moonshine just needs to stop pushing it. Draw the boundary for the both of them. It doesn’t matter how deeply Moonshine cares about him—that he’s the first person to make her feel seen, feel important—that she wants to spend the rest of her life with him, every second and millennium of it.
She’s still never going to be able to love him in the right way. In the way that he would want. So maybe the safe thing to do is to roll back over, fall back into trance, and wake up the next morning like nothing ever happened.

Pretty.
The word sends a strange jolt through Hardwon.
He knows he’s attractive, like, objectively. He’s tall, strong, muscular: thick of quad and calf. (Especially now that he’s thankfully bulked back up after becoming half-elf.) He’s got a big dick and a glorious beard. What more is a man supposed to be?
Pretty, however, is not a word that has ever really been applied to Hardwon Surefoot. Handsome, sure. Hot, totally. But pretty?
Hanging out with Beverly and Moonshine has taught Hardwon that maybe it’s worth it to try taking down his walls, little by little. That expressing his emotions won’t always get him hurt. But even if he wanted to, he doesn’t think he’d be able to describe the unfamiliar feeling that awakens in the center of his chest: something airy and light, so pure that it almost frightens him.

“Yeah, I’m down with death,” Hardwon says, truthfully. “I’ve been hanging out with Moonshine for a long time.” As he says it, he glances sideways at Moonshine. She doesn’t seem assured by his words. Life and death are two sides of the same coin, is supposed to be the whole M.O. of Moonshine Cybin, friend of fungus, ambassador of decay.
Yet, for him, she’s wrenched open a rift between the realms to demand his life back from the gods. To fight fate itself.
And wouldn’t Hardwon always fight at Moonshine’s side? Maybe it’s about time he tried to live for her, too.
“But I’ve got some shit to finish up first,” Hardwon says, turning back to Melora. “People who need me.”
Hardwon gets a new lease on life.
