It was as if she was stuck in a bad dream. Her family congregating on the tar mac of that airfield. The battle that ensued. Seeing him. Again.
She never would admit it. Not to Clint, nor Steve. The things she knew and witnessed by his own hands. It wasn’t something she discussed openly, her past in The Red Room. Sure, they knew. Knew that she was raised there. Knew of the trials, training and torture. The way that it had shaped her; mind, body and soul. Clint had seen it, the girl that came from their ranks. Saved her, reminded her of her worth even, but they still didn’t know everything.
She never talked about the nightmares. Memories of her life before SHIELD, before Clint and Phil, before The Avengers. They wouldn’t understand anyway. -

She clutched the folder that Peter had given her tightly, its paper supple and yellowed. A photograph of a young girl, no older than sixteen, was clipped to the front. Its print was black-and-white, but she could see enough to know that the resemblance was there. The girl had short hair, cut above her shoulders, a slight wave to it, and if Natasha had to guess, it would burn a vibrant red. The girl’s expression was somber, her eyes downcast, cheeks hollow, colourless. She had that look to her, as though she hadn’t smiled a day in her life.
In some ways, it remind Natasha of her own youth. "This is her?" She asked, not looking up from the file, though she knew the answer that she would receive.
Her fingers traced over the name printed in black ink at the centre of the folder: Romanov, Ellia.
Peter’s confusion was evident when he spoke. "Yeah, that’s Ellia. But, Misses Black Widow, I really don’t understand-"
"You don’t need to understand, Parker." She smiled slightly, her teeth cutting into her lower lip until the familiar taste of copper flooded her mouth. "You can go now. I’m sure Stark needs you in the lab."

America wasn't like the sitcoms Wanda watched as a child. There were no laugh tracks, falling was painful not slapstick, everything didn’t come out OK after 20 minutes, and the guy in the hospital didn’t go home at the end of the episode. If the Avengers were one big, happy family, then Wanda wasn’t a part of it.
Steve and Sam didn’t trust her and they were right to. Natasha was perfectly professional, as if Wanda hadn’t locked her into her worst memory and walked away. Clint had to return to his family and the other boys were rarely around. And Pietro, the life always sprinting parallel to her own, as crucial as oxygen, lay unnaturally still and silent, his mind closed off.
And then, one day, Natasha brought her daughter to work. And for the first time in four weeks, Wanda felt hopeful. Wanda was good with kids. Really good. And the others adored Steffie. Maybe if the kid warmed up to Wanda, the others would too.
… That wasn't precisely what happened.
Or how Wanda and Steffie hate each other until they don’t, and their sharp edges cut until they stitch.
