The bad thing about being a heavily augmented human working with two rogue constructs was that the two of them egged each other on at speeds a naturally organic brain couldn't hope to keep up with, and Nat either got dragged along for the ride or was the subject of their conspiring (or, often, both).

"Experience?"
"Yes." She raises an eyebrow. "Somewhere... larger than this. I always worked there. Now I'm... starting anew." Not technically a lie.
"Anew, is it?" Illa inhales more tobacco from her pipe, blowing it into my face again. This time I squint in response, which is a more normal human response. "You must have worked there from your youth. You aren't interested in another career path?"
Another path? My exe.nervousbeginner program has my hands fidgeting automatically. "I'm sure. I'm only good at this."

I hesitated. There was so much trust in that question, but it felt bittersweet, since I’d done so little to earn it. I’d wanted to do more, but with every act of affection or fierce protection curtailed by the governor module, I’d been little more than a reassuring presence.
As Huck looked up at me, his chin dripping tears, I realized how much I valued that trust. I had an answer to a question I’d never been free to ask: What did I want?
After its governor module is hacked, Nova risks its new freedom by returning to the mining installations of RaviHyral to search for Astra, Tlacey’s other ComfortUnit.
Along the way, Nova will encounter an abandoned SecUnit, an illicit troupe of performers dramatizing the injustice of the Corporation Rim, and Tlacey’s son, Huck, a child who is also in need of a chance at freedom from the cruelty of Rim life.

I cannot hear the roll of my new owner's eyes, but I can predict it easily enough. I used to like watching humans. Their little eccentricities fascinated me to no end. After our journey it wasn't enough anymore. Watching hurt when I knew what it was to touch, to hold, to be an unadulterated good. I miss it sometimes, the watching. When I do I replay my most precious memories and remind myself of the wonder behind my discontent.
I miss you, my last client and my miracle boy.
