In the agreement, Torrhen Stark and Aegon Targaryen agreed to many concessions that would be beneficial to both sides. Torrhen Stark would give up his title of King, but be renamed as the Ruling Prince of the North with his successors taking the same title, while other members of the family would simply be a Prince or Princess of the North – much like the Dornish do. The North would retain its laws, customs, culture, religion, and privacy, but every decade the Ruling Prince would come South to not only meet with the reigning monarch but also to reaffirm the oaths that Torrhen the Wolf and Aegon the Dragon agreed to. Most importantly, the two men agreed that should there ever be an unmarried Targaryen Crown Prince (or Crown Princess) and a Princess of the North (or Prince of the North) of a marriageable the two would wed to tie the blood of Old Valyria with the blood of the First Men.
The contract was signed as the sun rose over the Trident while Balerion the Black Dread roared and Snowstorm howled. They called it the Pact of Ice and Fire.

Whisk me north of the Neck before they stuff me in a gown and sell me to some fat southron lord to be bred like cattle.”
Already seeing the refusal taking shape on his lips, Baela curls her free hand into Cregan’s other shoulder, holds him in an iron grip, and leans so close their lips nearly brush. “Marry me, Lord Stark, and have me as you could never have him.”

It is 161 years after Aegon's Conquest and the last of the dragons that had forged the Iron Throne in fire and blood are dead. King Baelor the Blessed sits upon the throne, ruling the Seven Kingdoms with a pious heart and a gentle hand, but the realm still feels the effects of the Dance of the Dragons that happened in his father's youth, and there is no man in the South who does not know of Cregan Stark and the Hour of the Wolf that had paved the way for Aegon the Younger's regency...and the price that came before it, the Pact of Ice and Fire that had been sworn in the eyes of gods and men in exchange for Northern support. Gold and riches were given to the Starks, gifts of steel and prestigious titles, but the greatest prize of all is the most pressing - the hand of a Targaryen princess, to be wed to the heir of Winterfell once they came of age.
Though King Baelor is reluctant to give a Targaryen woman to the Starks, the Old Man of the North will not be denied his prize...and for Daena Targaryen, locked within a tower of Maegor's Holdfast, the Starks could not have come soon enough.
