    Summary

The Franklin Expedition returns with only five survivors. Dundy heads home, but the burden he carries is set to ruin everything—especially when he's afraid to choose anything but his own survival. James returns to London, but the life he used to live isn't the same—or maybe it's him that's changed. Regardless, there's one, albeit it big, townhouse, and a rolling green country, and a world that hasn't really changed in the three years they've been gone—three years spent dying. Over all of this, hangs a shroud of unfamiliarity to everything once very, very familiar.
They used to be friends, is the thing. But then the Expedition came, and with it came death and all the messy hell that death drags along behind it. With that big a void in the way, mending the rickety friendship that used to be there is the last thing on their minds. Further still is anything beyond than that. And yet... and yet and yet... there is a certain appeal to this new unknown, isn't there?

    Summary

An ominous trickle came from the vicinity of the sink. Francis let out just about every profanity he could think of, directed at the pipes, the freezing thereof, his cheapskate landlord, London rent prices, climate change, and the overall injustice of the world.

    Summary

“And where is Francis in all this?”

The worry was evident in Ross’s voice and Fitzjames had to make an effort to not grimace. “Ill,” he said at last. “Too ill to command."

    Summary

Stephen’s fingers hover over the keyboard and then plunge decisively. “I am a balding, depressive misanthrope with two divorces under my belt and few friends,” he types. “My longest successful relationship was with a cactus (RIP). I almost certainly think I'm smarter than you and I'm very likely right. Message me if you enjoy being sneered at and opera (probably not at the same time, unless you like Verdi). My friend Harry made me do this.” There. He snaps an unsmiling selfie and uploads it without checking it, and hits submit. His dating profile is live, on a site that isn’t Grindr, which means he has fulfilled his promise. Obviously, because he's been honest about himself, no one is going to match with him, but Harry didn't specify the profile had to be appealing.

    Summary

“Lieutenant,” says Crozier, setting his pen down and turning in his chair so that he and Henry are facing each other.
    Henry nods. “Sir.”
A silence passes between the two of them. The wind whistles outside, yawning over the rocks and whipping the cords of the tent. Finally, Crozier straightens, asks, “Are you here because you’ve something to report, or something you need?”
“No, sir,” Henry replies, letting the flap of the tent fall behind him. “I only wished to speak with you.”
    “About what?”
“Not a report, sir. About James.”
