    Gamora thought about what's been said and what's been left unsaid.
    What Peter has said. What Mantis said when the empath had spoken feelings for the both of them.
    Most importantly, Gamora thought about all the things she's never said.
    All of the things she still has yet to say.

    She kept coming back to it. She couldn't stop thinking about it.
    You are afraid.
    Gamora thought about how scared she was, seeing all the bodies, the skeletons, the death- knowing she left Peter back here in the palace where something was so wrong.
    He was consumed in the happy fantasy of the place, wanting so badly to believe this unreal world. Peter fell for the happy deception, and she left him here all alone, in this place of death and decay with the pretty picture he believed. When he was still convinced in the goodness of the place, he was alone, without her, standing on the surface of a land filled with corpses.
    You are afraid.
    No, that wasn’t quite right.
    In that moment, her hand around Mantis’s neck, gripping tightly, shouting about the skeletons at the core and demanding to know where Peter was… she was terrified.

    “No. Ugh,” Gamora groans, like he was so slow for not getting what she meant immediately. “The song. I found the song!”
    “Huh?”
    “This one. It's this one,” she says, shoving the zune in his face for him to read the screen.
    He actually has to take it from her and hold it himself, since he couldn't see what it said when she was waving it in his face. He doesn't recognize it. Must be one of the newer ones.
    “Whaddya mean 'you found it'? What'ja find?” He glances back down at the song title and information. “I don't think I've even listened to this one yet, Gamora. What are you talking about?”
    Gamora makes an impatient huff at his confusion, which he probably would've had a snarky remark for because seriously, she's barging into his room and then has the audacity to be annoyed by him- but she was obviously very excited to show him something, and it was super cute how childishly frustrated she was that he didn't get it right away. It was incredibly endearing, eager and innocent in a way Gamora usually wasn't, so he kept his mouth shut.
    “Us song,” she says, like he's supposed to know what that means. “My us song.”

    There were many things Gamora expected in the aftermath of Ego. Trouble adjusting to their new environment on the Eclector, the emotional fallout following Yondu’s death, struggling to work together cohesively with Mantis suddenly joining the Guardians, and her dynamic with the others as a functioning member of the team still had yet to be worked out. Those were just a few of the things she expected.
    What she didn't see coming, however, was how Peter had started hanging out with Nebula more. Nebula- of all people.
    It came out of nowhere, this sudden thing between them. Attachment? Friendship? It didn't make any sense. Gamora barely had time to bond with her own sister during and after the Ego incident, so when the hell did Nebula find time to bond with Peter?
    She thought they hated each other.
    Gamora refused to admit she was jealous of all the time they spent together, how they regularly communicate and meet up much more often than Nebula talks to Gamora, and of course she is never included whenever her sister and her maybe-kinda-boyfriend person have these meetings of theirs.

    It is strange, Gamora thinks. How one can seem so world weary and innocent, how one can carry so much weight and past in their eyes, while being this open and trusting- this full of life. It doesn't make sense that someone could be so broken and in need of protecting, so wholesome and full of love and dangerous in ways she doesn't think the others have fully grasped, that anyone has fully grasped.
    He's full of contradictions, this Peter Quill.
    Sometimes he's smiles and laughter, nothing but song and dance that puts her at ease, making her feel lighter than she has in years. Sometimes he's eerie quiet with a darkness just beyond his eyes, something ageless and cold, the likes of which she's never seen. Sometimes he's all hurt and sad looks, a disconnected knowledge and awareness that he's frightfully good at hiding, an expression as he looks at people like he's learning from what's not quite like him, learning how to act as one of them.
    Sometimes he's a sinking feeling that puts her on edge, raises the hair on her arms, that he knows more than he should, a subtle uneasiness that something about him is not of this world, that he's something wrong.
