The steel tub is too small. It's huge for normal standards, Fenris could fully lie there without his toes reaching the other side of it, but for Hawke? It's too short in length and his knees are poking through the steaming water. His dark curly hair is wet and wavy and sticking to his face and shoulders, and his enormous hands are drooping on both sides of the tub.
Hawke's missing left eye is a scar. The other one is still coffee brown and warm.

Hawke cracks a smile into her pillow, the backs of her eyelids peachy with the lamplight filtering through. How terribly irresponsible. She could give Carver all sorts of ideas with stunts like that, and who knows what fouler beasts are lurking in the Deep Roads, ready to put one measly little Arishok to shame?

“Shit,” Varric swears.
Hawke can’t believe it. And yet, it somehow makes perfect sense that the Arishok is squatting in a cave on the coast. How much weirder and more complicated can her life possibly get?
“Well. Guess the Qunari didn’t take him with them after all,” Hawke murmurs quietly. The Arishok doesn’t look up, he simply strides to the ocean where it beats against the rocky shore.
Varric shakes his head and creeps carefully up beside her. As they watch in silence, the Arishok pauses just above the waves. Then, almost in slow motion, the man drops his hands to his pants and begins to tug them downward.
“Avert your virgin eyes, Hawke.” Varric’s voice is thick with laughter, but Hawke refuses to look away from the firm, muscled backside being revealed in all its glory.
“You’re watching.”
“Author’s curiosity,” Varric explains smoothly. “Gotta have all the details when I write your biography.”

When she asks him to tell her a story to help her get to sleep, Varric obliges, but the tale's an awfully familiar one. Hawke can't help feeling that maybe she's heard it before...but if there's one thing Varric's good at, it's surprising his audience.
