Summary
Tommy Kinard doesn’t believe in vampires. The whole idea is ridiculous, and so is the secret organization insisting that that’s what the 118 are. But the Talamasca leave him no choice - spy on his friends, or lose everything.
Caught between a truth he refuses to believe and a betrayal he can’t escape, Tommy finds himself reluctantly watching people who’ve done nothing to deserve it.
It’s madness. It’s impossible. And it’s destroying him, because one of the people they’ve ordered him to watch is the man he’s falling in love with.

Summary
After Bobby’s funeral, Buck finds comfort in a faceless storyteller online, a voice and silhouette that feels far too familiar.
When a helicopter goes down and the pilot’s name hits the radio, that quiet obsession turns into something else entirely. -

Summary
“But with Bobby, I’ve been trying to do better,” Eddie says.
A hand rests on his shoulder, a thumb stroking. It’s a familiar gesture, but the fingers aren’t calloused enough to be her brother’s. Maddie’s fingers are slimmer, more delicate. It eases the hurt all the same.
“I think you have been,” Maddie reassures him, “at least you’re not joining illegal fight clubs this time. Just very legal book clubs.”
Eddie snorts. The callout was unexpected.
“You’re not what?” Karen’s eyes bulge out of her head as she sits back down.
Eddie chuckles and finally meets Maddie’s gaze. “I hate that Buck tells you everything.”
OR: Eddie joins a book club with Maddie and Karen after Bobby’s death, while Buck slowly drifts away.

Summary
They should all be dealing with things. Talking about their grief and wanting to move forward.
They obviously don’t do any of that.
Chris stays stuck on the events that caused him to move.
Eddie doesn’t know who he is.
Buck can’t stop falling apart.
Or what if this was a storyline after Bobby died. Everyone trying their best to heal, just hoping it happens without trying.

Summary
The walls were cold. They were blank and hollow, mocking. No picture frames. No posters. Not even an added shelf. They were white, bright, and devoid of life.
They were exactly what he needed.
No proof of life. No proof of things he didn’t deserve, of love he didn’t deserve. Here he was Evan Buckley, a man with nothing and who was tired of trying to force himself into a life he didn’t fit in.

Buck moves out and struggles.

Summary
Eddie did not know what it felt like to have a gun pointed at him. Technically, he did, since in Afghanistan people had shot at him so many times that he had lost count, but it had been different then. The people who had shot at him had done it out of pure pragmatism, never to threaten or terrify him before pulling the trigger.
Even the sniper who had targeted him for what was probably minutes had been different, because Eddie had not known. He had not known someone was about to shoot him, so he did not know how it felt to stand in front of a drawn weapon.
He had never wanted Buck to know it.

Summary
"I went in today to look at open transfers because Colton is moving to Kansas City in late June and Buckley just put in a transfer request a few days ago,” Sal said.
They had been texting yesterday. Evan had said he was hanging in there.
“The others. Hen. Howie. Ravi-Ravi Panniker. Any of them?” Tommy said, mind desperately trying to figure out if this was a group thing.
If it wasn’t a group thing-
“No. I looked three times over. Buck is the only transfer prospect from the 118,” Sal said.
-The alarm bells turned to klaxons.
Last summer, under Gerrard, Evan had found the 118 to be hell. He hated going into work, he came home tense and fell into Tommy’s waiting arms for long hugs. He didn’t love the job under a man like Gerrard, and he hated that fact. Evan lived for firefighting, but not under Gerrard. He had had the transfer paperwork. Tommy had encouraged him to use it.
Evan had always said not without his family. He had been firm on that. He’d shoulder this emotional drain of losing his love for a good chunk of his job before he left his family.
(Sal sees Buck's transfer request on the LAFD transfer website. Tommy know implicitly what it means and it's nothing good)

Summary
"But first. Evan. What if I brought my mom up because of you?” Buck can feel himself frowning, looks up so he can meet Tommy’s eyes again. All he can see in his eyes is sincerity.
(And fondness. Buck is trying to ignore that.)
“I thought it might make you feel better to know that I can remember her, now, without — well.” Tommy shrugs one shoulder, huffs out something that isn’t quite a laugh. “Without wanting to cry every time. Or feeling like I’m being stabbed in the heart.”
(A conversation and a half; a little about nineties country, a little about losing a parent, and a little about Buck and Tommy themselves.)

Summary
“I need your help,” Eddie had said, frantic and begging, eyes huge and desperate.
“Anything, Eddie,” Buck had said, and meant it, heart in his throat, a hundred horrible scenarios flashing though his mind.
“I need you to chaperone Chris’s field trip with me and save me from the PTA moms.”
“Uh...come again?”

Summary
It’s Buck who gets shot on the call this time. Nothing so severe as the time Eddie got shot—just a graze of his shoulder, a rip of his LAFD-issued t-shirt. But enough. Enough that there’s a small spray of blood—just a few drops. Eddie’s standing close enough, turned toward Buck, laughing at something Buck just said, mouth open. He can taste the copper.

Summary
Buck furrowed his brows. “But you were so prepared to go back. How can you think all that and still want to go back?” It wasn’t upset, but genuine confusion.
Eddie laughed nervously. “I wasn’t thinking it. Not then, at least. I’d won my son back and I was desperate to keep it like that. But then Chimney told me to stay, and it reminded me of...well. Me. Forcing my way back into Chris’ life. Because he didn’t know how to ask me to come in,”
He sighed then, and licked his lip before turning fully toward Buck.
“Being here is what’s right for Chris. And if I'm thinking selfishly, it's right for me, too. The 118 is right. And you...” He stared at Buck, brown eyes softening. Buck's chest rose and fell. He felt his heart…do something.

Summary
As it turns out, Chris had been waiting for his dad to confirm they could stay in LA.
“This is home,” he’d stated simply. And that had been that.
However, that left the Diaz boys with one tiny problem - their former house was currently occupied. Luckily for them, said occupant loved their company and welcomed them back home with open arms. There wasn’t much by way of discussion - Eddie had told Buck that he and Christopher were staying in LA, Buck showed Christopher that his room was ready and waiting for him, and they celebrated with an evening of pizza and video games.
For a while, things were easy. Simple. Eddie was back at the 118, all of their belongings had been shipped over from El Paso, and the three of them developed a rhythm that made living together seamless.
At some point along the way, though, something shifted.
or; Eddie is in love with Buck. Buck is in love with Eddie. Neither knows how to deal with their current living situation, and instead of talking about it, things spiral out of control.

Summary
Hard days are inevitable. Eddie knows he’s in one when he wakes with a pounding headache, like a person lives inside of his skull and their only purpose is to bang a hammer against his temple. He struggles, thumb and index finger pinched to the bridge of his nose as if it’ll make a difference. Buck struggles, tension in his shoulders plain enough for Eddie to read like words on a page. Even Chris struggles in his own teenager-filled-with-endless-angst kind of way.
Eddie feels tense and jumpy on the hard days.
He’s reminded of Afghanistan, of the constant anticipation for something bad to happen (even if it never does).
He supposes grief is its own kind of war. It’s a reminder that their lives have changed, are changing, and will change.
