Then he reached inside with the rubber-gloved hand that was still protected by his suit and gently lifted the specimen free. “Specimen is lightweight, within the expected density for a flower of its dimensions. However there is no visible stamen, pistil, stigma, or filament. Nor any notable structure at the center of the pseudo-petals.”
“Well there has to be something at the center,” Dr. Underhill quibbled.
“I’ll take a closer look,” Casper declared, reaching with his index finger to gently prise the petals at the center apart.
“Wait, Casper–”
A puff of some sort of pollen or dust exploded outward from the center of the specimen, directly into Casper’s face. His eyes were protected by his glasses, but their collected samples had been so tame that neither her nor Dr. Underhill had applied a face mask. He coughed and spluttered, trying not to inhale the substance, but knowing in his bones he was already contaminated.
