There has been a rivalry for millennia between the two prominent covens of the Universe's western quadrant-- that of the Graves, who worship death in its natural form and make comfortable those who move on, and that of the Wastes, who defy death and evade it desperately with every method to be found in the universe.
Yet the last two children of these storied traditions met their ends together. Rooms apart in the same dark cavern, for the same cause, one longing for the comfort of the other, of another last survivor of another coven to the south, or of anyone. That was the end of them. But the first time these western witches met, the Witch of the Wastes told the last Sister of Graves she had already made herself dead, and still she walked the Universe.
For she is the last of those who defy death and evade it desperately with every method to be found, and death does not put an end to her pursuits so easily.

The joke is on them when things don’t exactly go according to plan and two of them are forced to play pretend-lovers for a couple of days. The punchline is that they harbor not-so-secret feelings for each other that they may be forced to finally acknowledge if they want to keep up their ruse.

When Ale tries to save Angelo from some unwanted advances by pretending to be his boyfriend, a surprise encounter forces them to live out their lie for a little longer than expected. This, of course, should not pose any problems for Ale, who is entirely capable of waiting until they’ve beaten Galahad to be with the man he loves.

This was how nights went after good days, the days Caroline was home and the bubbles of Quanyii’s laughter were shining and real. One of them made dinner and they ate at their small table, Gawain lying patiently beside them in hopes of picking up dropped scraps. They would wash dishes shoulder to shoulder, Quanyii splashing Caroline with suds and Caroline hitting her gently with a dish towel.
Nights like these, they would end up, in some configuration, in their bedroom.
